Job Description

Position Summary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for Manager, One Health. This fulltime fixedterm position is for approximately one year (based on grant funding), with possibility of extension. A One Health approach, as defined by WHO, involves multiple sectors communicating and working together to achieve improved public health outcomes. One Health at UCalgary serves as a hub from the office of the VPR and supports universitywide research that employs a One Health lens. Reporting to the Convenor of One Health, the Manager will support the ongoing evolution of the OH initiative in program development and implementation, serve as key liaison with academic, funding, and implementation partners, oversee operations, and initiate collaboration with grant applicants, partner institutions, collaborators and industry partners to grow research programmes and maximise impact. Responsibilities Support the Convenor and other key decisionmakers to determine overall objectives for OH and lead the finalisation and implementation of a new strategic plan. Collaborate with the Convenor and key partners in conceptualisation and operations of new and existing One Health initiatives. Develop policies, protocols and procedures for daytoday operations and programmes within OH. Lead execution of various programming, including public/community engagement, graduate scholarships, professional workshops and partner events. Collaborate with worldclass medical professionals, internationally known physicianscientists and veterinarians, federal and provincial government, industry and other stakeholders to ensure alignment between research programmes. Develop a communication strategy to facilitate knowledge sharing, website management and social media presence. Establish metrics and evaluation processes for OH programmes, leading to internal reporting and external communications. Act as liaison between the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, other institutional Faculties and departments, and groups such as Cumming School of Medicine, Faculty of Science, WA Ranches, W21C, ACWA, etc. Identify areas for potential financial growth through new research collaborations, grants and other external funding. Support and advise the Convenor on financial planning, budgeting, internal allocations and reporting. Assemble transdisciplinary teams to pursue new opportunities and respond to funding calls. Lead the grantwriting process from idea inception to application submission across a variety of agencies (provincial, TriCouncil, foundations, consortia, etc.). Liaise with UCalgary development teams to enhance existing donor engagement and identify new relationships. Work with UCalgary finance partners to ensure compliance with policies and accurate financial reporting. Represent UCalgary and OH at events, meetings and in partnerships. Liaise with faculty leaders and decisionmakers regularly to maintain relationships and identify areas for collaboration. Clarify stakeholder roles, develop new relationships and foster longterm engagement. Foster OH involvement in external networks, including the Canadian One Health University Network and North American One Health University Network. Support the execution and coordination of COHUN initiatives through engagement with leads from other universities. Collaborate on adhoc One Healthrelated events and initiatives with internal and external partners. Identify new partners in government, industry and the community. Oversee a small team of direct reports, including administrative and/or research staff to support research programmes. Provide projectspecific supervision of activities, as required. Manage routine, sensitive and complex human resource issues and requirements. Empower staff to grow and execute deliverables as part of their career trajectories. Accountable for performance management and professional development of direct reports. Hire new staff according to project and program needs. Develop HR plans to ensure that programme staff can meet objectives, and adapt plans and priorities to meet research and operational challenges. Provide guidance in preparing detailed budgets and justifications for funding applications. Direct and manage multifaceted, complicated budgets, operations and measurement reporting requirements. Monitor spending of comprehensive research financial budgets for OH@UC for both shortterm and longterm planning purposes. Review, present and justify budget requests to research services and administration as needed. Monitor and approve all expenditures, assign appropriate cost centres and ensure compliance. Identify and investigate potential problem areas and propose solutions. Qualifications & Requirements DVM, MD, PhD or equivalent degree in a healthrelated field; or graduate degree in public health, veterinary medicine or a healthrelated discipline with experience leading research and operations. Minimum of five years of progressively responsible management experience in a related field; Alberta experience is an asset. Familiarity with and/or experience in the health or agricultural sectors, government, postsecondary (UCalgary is an asset) and industry. Knowledge of financial systems (UCalgary is an asset) and controls (federal, provincial and local), budget management and project management frameworks. Experience conceptualising and writing successful grant applications to various agencies (provincial, federal, foundation, consortia, etc.). Ability to work independently, confidentially and accept responsibility for complex and sensitive decisionmaking. High analytical ability to manage the financial and human resource aspects of the position. Current knowledge of policies, processes and regulations pertaining to research administration. Ability to interpret, analyse and disseminate critical information to stakeholders. Strategic, global thinker with a deep commitment to promoting positive impact through research and policy, and the ability to influence, inspire confidence, build consensus and work successfully with varied audiences. Previous experience and demonstrated successes in building coalition or alliances of partners and developing robust multidisciplinary collaborations. Demonstrated track record of success in building, leading, facilitating and managing programmes and partnerships. Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with a wide array of health and agricultural experts, stakeholders and thought leaders. Application Deadline: May 4, 2026.
