About the Queer & Trans Health Collective The Queer & Trans Health Collective is an Edmonton-based, grassroots health organization run by and for queer and trans community members. We empower queer and trans wellbeing by providing and promoting equitable access to health education, support, capacity building, community-based research, and provider training. Position Description The Executive Director (ED) provides strategic leadership and operational oversight to the Queer & Trans Health Collective (QTHC). The role exists to ensure the three pillars of the QTHC Community-based Research, Education and Advocacy, and Harm Reduction are delivered through programs, personnel, and projects designed to educate and empower members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. This is done by executing the organizations vision and strategic plan through empowering programs, sustainable funding, and community-rooted advocacy. Authority The ED serves as the primary liaison between the Board of Directors and staff. The ED holds decision-making authority over daily operations, staff supervision, and the implementation of Board-defined strategic priorities. The ED has authority to manage organizational budgets, enter into grant agreements, and represent the organization to external stakeholders and the media. The ED has the ability to recruit, hire, train, discipline, and terminate staff. Qualifications Education: Bachelors or Masters degree in Non-Profit Management, Social Work, Public Administration, or a related field preferred. Experience: 5-7+ years of progressive leadership experience in the non-profit sector, specifically in healthcare and/or 2SLGBTQIA+ advocacy. Specialized Certifications: Financial management training or non-profit governance certification is an asset. Board certification is considered an asset. Duties and Responsibilities 1. Strategic Leadership & Tactical Delivery Direct the implementation of the 2025-2028 Strategic Plan, ensuring all activities align with the AIMS of Empowering Programs, Increased Sustainability, and Energizing Collaborations. Lead and guide the leadership team and staff, ensuring the organizations vision drives all leadership decisions through timely meetings, off-site retreats, and regular one-on-one discussions. Facilitate a By-Community, For-Community ethos in all aspects of leadership and operations. Collaborate with the Board to formalize organizational values and update bylaws to reflect current community needs based on previous years reporting. Identify and mitigate organizational risks (legal, reputational, and operational); ensure the organization complies with all provincial and federal legislation, including Health and Safety, Privacy (FOIP/HIA), and Employment Standards. 2. Financial Management & Resource Development Secure and maintain organizational funding, aiming for an average annual increase of 5% in grant revenue. Achieve a 30% or higher success rate in grant applications annually; act as the key grant writer with support from leadership and staff. Execute a fund development plan to grow fundraising and donations to approximately 5% of the annual budget. Ensure fiscal accountability by preparing detailed quarterly budget-to-actual reports and avoiding funding clawbacks due to underspending. Assist the leadership team in ensuring proper resource allocation including time, budget, and full-time equivalent staffing levels. 3. People Management & Internal Strength Supervise and mentor a diverse team of leadership, staff, and peer workers, conducting annual reviews with direct reports on their individual performance and understanding of organizational policies. Lead and foster a positive work environment, measured through anonymous 360-degree staff surveys. Empower and coach the leadership team to build proficiency in people management skills at the frontline level; support employment relations decisions at the supervisory level. Lead the internal operationalization of anti-oppression, anti-racism, and decolonization principles, ensuring these values are integrated into all HR policies, procurement, and organizational structures. Assess and prioritize recommendations from 360-degree staff surveys to improve staff morale and retention through organizational policy change or implementation. 4. Stakeholder Obligations & Community Engagement Act as the primary spokesperson for QTHC, developing a robust communications strategy to monitor and respond to municipal, provincial, and federal legislative changes affecting 2SLGBTQIA+ health; and represent the organization in government consultations and policy working groups to advocate for systemic change. Build and deepen partnerships with cross-movement organizations, government agencies (e.g., PHAC, AHS, Health Canada), and health sector stakeholders. Lead community consultation efforts to ensure programming remains responsive to the needs of 2SLGBTQIA+ Edmontonians. Develop and lead QTHCs response to external crises or emergency issues when appropriate, ensuring the safety and mental well-being of staff and community members during periods of heightened social or political tension. Actively support the Board of Directors in the recruitment, orientation, and ongoing development of new Board members to ensure a diverse, skilled, and representative governing body. Ensure that leadership, staff, and peer worker safety is paramount for every interaction with community members; provide each location or event primary staff with the policies and procedures regarding Health & Safety obligations. Competencies Deep understanding and lived experience of the social and political challenges facing the 2SLGBTQIA+ community in Alberta. Experience developing project grant proposals and obtaining multi-year project grants ($250,000+). Experience managing project budgets, from development through to financial reporting ($500,000+). Expertise in staff management and fostering inclusive, trauma-informed work environments through non-violent communication. Executive-level experience in liaising with non-government organizations, government, and corporations for program reporting and outcomes. Working Conditions Work arrangements are flexible (hybrid), with in-office presence for face-to-face interactions with staff highly encouraged. Standard 40-hour work week, although flexibility is required during peak processing periods or for community events. Time is largely spent at a computer, occasionally standing or walking. Potential exposure to hazardous materials related to Spectrum Testing; prior training on use, disposal, storage, and testing will be provided, and personal protective equipment required. Only trained personnel may touch hazardous materials. Driving may be required; valid drivers licence required. Physical Requirements Standard office-based demands including computer use and light mobility. Attendance at events outdoors in any weather with limited shelter. Possible lifting of up to 50 pounds alone or with assistance for outreach tent setup. Mental and psychosocial resilience needed to navigate potential political hostility or systemic challenges; compassion fatigue may occur.
