Location: This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton. The position has an active period of 10 months. The Department of Drama seeks a Head of Wardrobe to oversee costume design and production for both the Timms Centre for the Arts and the Fine Arts Building (FAB). The role supports student experience through managing all costume details related to Dramas performances, supervising the wardrobe shop team, facilities, and specialty equipment. Responsibilities Manage the execution of graduate student/faculty designs for Studio Theatre productions and undergraduate student designs for FAB productions (approximately 12+ presentations per year). Cost the costume designs, source elements and materials, fabricate and alter costumes, advise on functional design choices, and maintain show budgets and deadlines. Ensure proper caretaking of costume resources and department assets, including storage, repair, retrieval and assessment of costumes. Support Dramas academic programs in costume design, production, and character creation, and assist students in all production aspects related to costume. Supervise the Fine Arts Costumers delivery of FAB productions and classroom projects, the Costume Cutters work with students and faculty, and casual staff as needed. Provide instruction and direction to staff and practicum students in draping, pattern drafting, construction techniques (machine and hand sewing), dye/fabric painting, millinery, costume tracking and maintenance, and workplace health and safety. Communicate effectively with team members across the Department of Drama and collaborate with the Drama Production Coordinator and other production department heads. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Design or Clothing and Textile, or a Technical Diploma in construction of clothing or costumes for theatre. 68 years of theatre costuming experience, including 34 years in wardrobe or costume shop management. Demonstrated ability to manage a busy production shop, oversee equipment operation, maintain stock of supplies, and coordinate multiple projects. Thorough knowledge of costume construction techniques, pattern drafting, cutting, draping, hand and machine sewing, altering, fabric properties, dyeing, and maintenance. Experience with domestic and industrial sewing machines, boiler tank irons, and industrial sergers. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail. Ability to manage production activities, prioritize deliverables, solve problems, and train others. Valid Alberta Class 5 drivers licence and reliable transportation outside typical working hours. Willingness to obtain CPR/Basic First Aid and WHMIS credentials. Preferred Qualifications Flexible schedule, including occasional nights and/or weekends during technical rehearsal periods. Experience with production resource inventory tools. Experience in a postsecondary institution (not required). Familiarity with CAEA agreements, DOT policy, IATSE agreements and working rules. Physical Considerations Navigate stairs and access elevated work areas. Lift up to 45 lbs and manipulate overhead loads up to 25 lbs. Sit or stand for extended periods. Complete tasks requiring manual dexterity and fine motor skills. Work with industrial costume equipment involving hot surfaces, powered mechanical parts and sharp edges.
