Position Overview Reporting to the CEO, the Engineering Manager is responsible for leading and overseeing Marids Engineering Department. This role combines technical expertise with people leadership, ensuring that structural steel designs meet client requirements, comply with applicable codes and standards, and represent the most economical and constructible solutions. The Engineering Manager plays a key role in design-build projects, supports estimating efforts, and provides mentorship and guidance to Engineers and Engineers-in-Training (EITs). This is an excellent opportunity for a seasoned engineering professional who enjoys both handson technical work and developing highperforming teams. Key Responsibilities Leadership & Team Development Lead, manage, and supervise the Engineering Department, ensuring workloads are balanced and project priorities are met. Provide mentorship, technical direction, and performance feedback to Engineers, EITs, and detailing/checking staff. Foster a collaborative, respectful, and inclusive team environment. Engineering & Technical Oversight Oversee the structural design of steel projects, including new construction and renovations. Ensure shop drawings, erection drawings, and design diagrams reflect the most efficient, economical, and constructible solutions. Review drawings for compliance with contract documents, specifications, addenda, and applicable codes and industry standards. Coordinate with Detailers to develop designs, sketches, and connection details. Review shop detail diagrams and erection drawings for accuracy, constructability, and compliance. Ensure appropriate design checks are completed and that all design changes are documented and implemented. Maintain and update standard details and design practices as required. Lead and contribute to design-build projects, including preliminary and conceptual designs. Support the estimating team by completing preliminary designs and contributing to accurate project estimates. Conduct research and collaborate with clients and internal teams to define project requirements during both preliminary and detailed design phases. Liaise with Project Managers, senior management, and client consultants to achieve project objectives. Participate in project and management meetings, including discussions on scope, risk, and execution strategies. Promote efficient, cost-effective engineering practices across all projects. Quality, Safety & Continuous Improvement Ensure compliance with Marids policies, procedures, and quality assurance processes. Participate in monthly safety toolbox meetings and support company safety initiatives. Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, LEAN programs, and operational best practices. Engage in ongoing professional development to remain current with industry codes, standards, and technologies. Requirements Education Bachelor of Engineering in Civil or Structural Engineering from a recognized institution. Experience & Skills Minimum 10 years of experience working with steel structures. Registration as a P.Eng (or eligibility for registration) in Nova Scotia or another Canadian jurisdiction. Proven leadership experience with the ability to manage, mentor, and develop technical teams. Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business correspondence and technical documents (such as drawings and specifications) and effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients and other employees. Solve practical problems and manage a variety of concrete variables in situations with limited standardization, interpreting instructions provided in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Strong understanding of fabrication, erection, and construction methods. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly to a variety of stakeholders. Solid problemsolving, conceptual, and spatial reasoning abilities. Comfortable applying mathematical concepts such as percentages, ratios, areas, and volumes to practical engineering situations. Familiarity with applicable industry standards and building codes is required. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and engineering/design software such as AutoCAD, Tekla (Xsteel), RAM, SAFI, or similar tools. Experience with ERP or scheduling software is considered an asset.
