Job Information: Job Title: Crown Prosecutor Job Requisition ID: 82634 Ministry: Justice Location: Calgary Full or Part-Time: Full Time Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week Permanent/Temporary: Permanent and Temporary Scope: Open Competition Closing Date: May 19, 2026 Classification: Crown Prosecutor 1 - 4 Salary: CP1: $3,947.31 to $4,972.47 biweekly ($103,024 to $129,781 per year) CP2: $5,593.60 to $6,926.96 biweekly ($145,992 to $180,793 per year) CP3: $7,450.08 to $8,260.75 biweekly ($194,447 to $215,605 per year) CP4: $8,502.54 to $9,352.26 biweekly ($221,916 to $244,093 per year) Role Responsibilities The Alberta Crown Prosecution Services (ACPS) offers an opportunity for an innovative and energetic Crown prosecutor to join the Calgary Crown Prosecutions Office. The daily responsibilities of Crown prosecutors include bail, charge screening, early case resolution, alternative measures and restorative justice, decisions to proceed to trial or discontinue prosecution, conduct of prosecutions, entering a stay of proceedings, withdrawing charges, plea resolution, disclosure provision, choosing to proceed summarily or by indictment, sentencing decisions, drafting legal opinions and briefings, managing victims, witnesses, police and court staff, and launching appeals. The successful candidate will: Assess and determine what is in the public interest. Exercise prosecutorial discretion independently of extraneous pressures or improper influences. Ensure decisions are made in consultation with colleagues, superiors and investigators when required. Accurately summarize or refer to evidence or testimony. Determine appropriate charges, have discussions with defense counsel, interview witnesses and other parties in preparation for trial, and conduct examinations in the courtroom. Draft legal opinions, briefings and court documents professionally and appropriately. Deal effectively with participants of the justice system such as victims, witnesses, court staff, investigators, defense lawyers and the public. Demonstrate organized and persuasive advocacy skills. Demonstrate principled and effective negotiation skills. Qualifications A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD) and active membership or immediate eligibility for membership with the Law Society of Alberta is required. Crown Prosecutor 1: 04 years of legal experience required. Crown Prosecutor 2: Minimum of 4 years of legal experience required. Crown Prosecutor 3: Minimum of 11 years of legal experience required. Eligibility for Alberta Call to Bar or active membership. Assets Strong litigation experience, preferably in criminal law. Trial preparation and trial experience. Prosecution experience in criminal law. Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset. Law degrees obtained outside Canada must be accredited by the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA); proof of accreditation is required. This competition may also be used to fill future permanent and temporary positions at the same or lower classifications in the Calgary Crown Prosecution Office or elsewhere in the ACPS.
