Overview Medical Officers with Certification in the College of Family Physicians and Special Competency in Emergency Medicine (CCFP(EM)) provide urgent and emergent resuscitative care and instruction in pre-hospital and hospital environments for Canadian Forces Health Services training and deployed operations. They may serve as leaders, mentors, and educators to the full spectrum of military health care providers. Primary responsibilities include: Be part of multidisciplinary emergency resuscitation teams in Canada and in deployed settings, internationally Provide in-transport care for injured or ill Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members during evacuation Educate and advise multidisciplinary teams on emergency resuscitation Maintain a high level of clinical skills by holding a position within a civilian health care facility that meets approved CAF requirements Contribute to the development and application of health care policies within the CAF Work environment Medical Officer CCFP(EM)s in the CAF maintain clinical readiness by embedded clinical staff in civilian hospitals across Canada, working with civilian colleagues. In addition to primary clinical duties, they participate in education, training, and research opportunities nationally and internationally. They belong to 1 Canadian Field Hospital and maintain operational readiness through annual military skills training and field exercises. They may deploy to unique and challenging clinical environments as part of a Health Services team on domestic and international operations. If you choose Regular Force, after completing required training you will be assigned to your first base. Postings may require relocations. If you join the Primary Reserve, you will train and work part time with a Reserve unit and are not obligated to relocate. Primary Reserve members typically work one night per week and some weekends, with potential for full-time employment. Training At the first available opportunity, you will complete Basic Military Officer Qualification training at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec. Medical Officer CCFP(EM)s take the Condensed Health Services Basic Military Officer Qualification training, consisting of two weeks of Distance Learning and four weeks of in-house training in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. Topics include general military knowledge, leadership principles, regulations and customs of the Forces, basic weapons handling, and first aid. Training also includes field exercises, force protection, navigation, leadership, and a rigorous physical fitness program. Basic Military Officer Qualification is provided in English or French and is a prerequisite for further training. Medical Officer CCFP(EM)s must complete the Common Health Services Officer (CHSO) course (eight-day e-learning) via the Defence Learning Network. The CHSO course covers CAF policies and procedures and HR management of military members and civilian personnel. Medical Officer CCFP(EM)s attend the Basic Medical Officer Course at the Canadian Forces Health Services Training Center in Borden, Ontario, which introduces organizational structure and the practice of military medicine, using blended online and on-site delivery. Environmental training includes world-wide field exercises. Advanced training areas may include: Aviation Medicine; CMERT; Forward Aeromedical Evacuation; Mobile Surgical Resuscitation Team; Nuclear, Chemical and Biological Threats and Response; Forward Acute Care Resuscitation Team Training; Undersea Medicine; Epidemiology and Research; Medical Education and Simulation; and Military and Health Care Leadership. Part time options The Canadian Forces Health Services Reserves provide trained personnel to support CAF operations and training activities, while maintaining connections with the civilian community. Reservists must have an unrestricted license in their clinical field (including CCFP(EM)) and maintain clinical currency. Part-time positions may be available with the Primary Reserve across Canada. Reservists are paid during training and may volunteer for teaching, training, or deployment on missions domestically or internationally. Reservists may join a Reserve Field Ambulance; a typical annual commitment is 14 days of service and/or training. They may provide healthcare to CAF members, contribute to clinical teaching, participate in field exercises, and deploy as part of a Health Services team. All Reserve members may have opportunities to work internationally as part of deployed CAF Health Services teams on a voluntary basis. Reserve Medical Officers join a Reserve Field Ambulance and complete training that aligns with Regular Force levels. Primary Reserve Medical CCFP(EM)s typically contribute to clinical teaching and training across Canada and may deploy as part of a Health Services team domestically or internationally. Reserve members are paid per diem and may qualify for benefits and a pension plan.
