Overview As a member of the military, an Infantry Officer performs a wide range of duties, from commanding and leading soldiers as part of a team to occupying various staff positions involving planning, training, intelligence, logistics and personnel administration. As a commissioned member of Canadas Infantry regiments, which belong to the Combat Arms, Infantry Officers are capable of operating anywhere in the world, in any environment including Arctic tundra, mountains, jungle or desert and in any combination of arms, including parachute, airmobile and amphibious operations. Work environment Infantry Officers experience the unique challenges of working outdoors in various weather conditions. When not in the field, they are responsible for garrison duties, which include physical training, office work and supervision, mixed with instructing staff and outdoor field and weapons training. Office work is focused on personnel administration and maintenance of weapons, equipment, and vehicles, usually during regular working hours. Infantry Officers will be posted initially to one of three regiments: Royal Canadian Regiment in Petawawa, Ontario or Gagetown, New Brunswick Princess Patricias Canadian Light Infantry in Edmonton, Alberta or Shilo, Manitoba Royal 22e Rgiment in Valcartier, Quebec City, Laval, or Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec Regular Force members may be expected to relocate during their career, whereas Primary Reserve members typically work in a specific reserve unit on a parttime basis, usually one night per week and some weekends. Entry plans Direct Entry Options Paid Education Options Applicants who already possess a university degree will have their academic programs assessed by the CAF; if approved, they may be placed directly into the required onthejob training program following basic training. Basic training and military officer qualification training are required before assignment. For those without a degree, the Regular Officer Training Plan allows CAF officers to obtain a bachelors degree through the Royal Military College System. Recruits receive a fulltime salary, medical and dental care, vacation time with full pay, in exchange for a period of service in the CAF. Training After enrolment, officers begin basic officer training at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School for 12 weeks, covering military knowledge, leadership principles, CAF regulations, weapons handling, first aid, and physical fitness. Subsequent training may include secondlanguage instruction (two to nine months) and specialized infantry training at the Infantry School in Gagetown, New Brunswick. Training culminates in the ability to command a platoon, operate a Light Armoured Vehicle, use night vision systems, and conduct field operations. Specialized courses such as Patrol Pathfinder, Basic Parachutist and Free Fall may be available for selected officers. Part time options The Primary Reserve provides parttime employment with the Canadian Army at selected locations across Canada. Reserve Force members usually serve evenings and weekends while maintaining civilian work or study, and may volunteer for deployments.
