Job Description

Overview The Chest Unit is a 37 bed, acute surgical unit that provides care for a variety of surgical patients. The unit houses the Regional Thoracics Centre for our area, as well as our Head and Neck and the Surgical Stepdown Units (SSDU). Specialty medical and surgical services support patients with newly diagnosed disease including thoracic and head and neck cancer, reconstructive and plastic surgery and, the care of patients with progressive illness. Our 8-bed SSDU provides care for acutely ill surgical patients including those undergoing thoracic, orthopaedic, urology, gynecology, GI and General Surgical procedures. Our highly skilled and dedicated interprofessional team provide patient and family focused care and work to restore and maintain function in a highly collaborative and therapeutic care environment. Qualifications Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario required, AND Practical Nursing Diploma from an accredited college program with evidence of IV medication administration as part of the basic educational curriculum OR Practical Nursing Diploma from an accredited college program and IV medication administration certificate from an accredited college program if this content was not included in the basic diploma educational curriculum OR Practical Nursing Certificate from an accredited college program, a medication administration certificate and an IV medication administration certificate from an accredited college program A minimum of one year''s recent acute surgical/medical nursing experience is required Current BCLS/HCP certification required Demonstrated knowledge, sensitivity and expertise in the care of seniors and their families Gentle Persuasive Approach training preferred Must be able to complete the orientation as required Completion of the Epidural/PCA pain management therapy course during orientation is required Completion of the venipuncture skill and demonstrated competency is required Ability to function to the full scope of practice as per the College of Nurses of Ontario Ability to function in a changing fast paced environment Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and maintain good interpersonal relationships and set own workload priorities Committed to customer service Demonstrated problem-solving and organization skills and the ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team Preference will be given to applicants with recent experience in thoracic, head and neck, cardio-vascular surgery and plastic surgery Demonstrated commitment to professional development and continuing education Good work performance and attendance record are essential St. Josephs Health System (SJHS) and its member organizations are equal opportunity employers and strive for equity, inclusiveness, and diversity in all programs, practices, facilities, and people.
