Job Summary Under general direction, designs setups and conducts experimental programs and accurately obtains and records data; fabricates experimental apparatus. Performs R&D assignments that are not standardized or prescribed. May make modifications to experimental setups, troubleshoot, and correct equipment malfunctions as necessary, and provide oral and written status reports. Main function is to test products to the given Standards. Responsibilities Conduct a wide range of test procedures on product to the applicable standards and interpret the results of the test. Determine and review which tests are required, the order in which to perform tests and the number of samples required. Perform tests and calculations, compile data and summarize test results into test reports and checklists. Verify calculations are consistent with results of measurements. Determine whether a product passes or fails subject to review by Certifier/Reviewer. Assemble and disassemble test samples, hookup laboratory test equipment in preparation for testing, and operate most laboratory test equipment without supervision. Maintain good housekeeping of tools, equipment and work area following tests and carry out assigned laboratory cleanup duties. Record technical data and draft reports. Perform mathematical calculations required to summarize test results as applicable. Relate test results to product specifications. Act as a liaison with other departments as required by Manager. Note and record discrepancies or characteristics of products that may appear before or during the tests and refer them to Sr. Lab Tech, Certifier or Manager. Independently analyze complex samples to determine compliance to applicable requirements. Contribute to the development and implementation of requirements for new and/or revised standards as required. Interact with the Certifier to plan activities, exchange information, review and approve lab reports and certification records. Maintain and initiate direct certifier contact to provide information and answer questions or obtain more product information. Test to the certifiers requests and provide general and specific information about the certification testing process or status of a work order to assist the certifier and improve overall customer service and satisfaction. Provide the certifier with detailed interpretation of test results and construction evaluation and how it applies to the status of their certification. Perform witness testing as required by Sr. Lab Tech or Manager. Know how to operate test equipment. Education & Experience 3year Technical Certificate or equivalent education and experience, or Associates degree in engineering technology. Professional Membership eg. ASTT, OACETT or equivalent. 12 years of related experience in piping & plumbing related role and/or laboratory environment. Knowledge of piping standards CSA, ASME, ASTM, NSF would be an asset. Handson experience with test and measurement instruments e.g. micrometers, calipers, pressure gauges etc. Computer literate with ability to use MS Office (Teams, Word, Excel) and learn testing software. Manual dexterity and comfort with various tools and equipment in lab environment. Skills Know safe practices; ability to move equipment around with assistance or independently; follow safety practices; ability to use a variety of equipment to perform daily tasks. Adaptable to a changing work environment. Excel at research, problemsolving and project management. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to interact with internal customers as well as external. Excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to teach others, and work independently and as a team player. Excellent and effective time and project management skills to efficiently handle a variety of project requests in order to meet timelines for completion and ontime delivery. Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Suite), learn and be proficient in CSA programs (CENTRA, etc.), or any test equipmentbased software. As per the collective agreement, the starting biweekly pay rate for a Lab Tech I is $2,823.64 CAD gross and $3,274.90 CAD gross for a Lab Tech II. CSA Group reserves the right to determine the appropriate level and pay step within the band, and this will depend on factors such as education, licenses, certifications and experience.
