Responsibilities Lead the maintenance team and ensure all equipment and machinery operate safely, meet health and safety standards, and are ready for production demand. Ensure the safe operation and maintenance of the Simcoe Street Steam Plant and other duties as directed by the Chief Engineer. Responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of district energy systems, including large centrifugal chillers, steam turbine generators, primary and secondary pumping systems, heat exchangers, deep lake cooling, hot water plant, and boilers. Oversee steam turbine generator operation, startup/shutdown sequencing, load management, and coordination with the utility for grid-connected generation. Participate in Global Adjustment management and demand response programs, monitor designation thresholds, execute load GA strategies during peak events, and maintain records for IESO reporting and reconciliation. Lead by example to promote a safe and healthy work environment in compliance with applicable regulations and company safety policies. Ensure the annual maintenance program and work orders are completed on schedule, with appropriate records maintained in the CMMS and regulatory logbooks. Organize and monitor daily and weekly work schedules, balancing operational demands with planned maintenance activities. Order materials and spare parts and maintain proper inventory levels to support reliable plant operation. Liaise directly with service contractors, suppliers, inspectors, and customers in a professional manner consistent with a leadership role. Qualifications & Skills Hold a 2nd Class Operating Engineer Certificate issued by the Province of Ontario or be actively working toward a 2nd Class certificate with a minimum of three (3) SOPEEC examinations written. Minimum 10 years of experience in the operation and preventative maintenance of a chiller plant or comparable district energy facility. In accordance with TSSA regulations, work as Acting Chief Engineer during the absence or vacation of the Chief Engineer, assuming full responsibility for plant operations, regulatory compliance, and health and safety management on site. Demonstrated working knowledge of 4th intake / Deep Lake water cooling systems, including heat exchanger isolation, CIP procedures, and intake screening equipment. Familiarity with steam turbine generator operation and associated auxiliary systems (lube oil, governors, steam seals, condensate recovery). Understanding of Ontario electricity market structures, including Global Adjustment, IESO demand response programs, and peak demand curtailment strategies. Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel), with the ability to create spreadsheets, maintenance logs, and operational templates; experience with BAS/SCADA or CMMS platforms is an asset. Strong leadership skills with excellent verbal and written communication; trustworthy, respectful, and able to foster positive working relationships with contractors, suppliers, inspectors, staff, and customers. Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills across mechanical, electrical, and control systems in a chiller plant environment. Ability to assess and prioritize effectively in emergencies or abnormal operating situations; hard-working, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple concurrent tasks, planning, organizing, and making sound operational decisions.
