Job Description

Position Purpose Summary The Day Camp Leader is responsible for coordinating, conducting, and supervising all day camp activities while assisting the leadership and direction of day camp staff. The Day Camp Leader will provide a safe, fun, caring environment while the children are participating in a variety of activities, making new friends, and learning about the Christian faith. Accountabilities Program Lead the development and implementation of camp activities, coordinating the schedule Provide direct leadership of daily camp operations and assist with various camp activities including Bible lessons, arts & crafts, music, sports, and games. Oversee engagement of volunteers and their activities. Observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, and address issues as needed. Chaperone children on field trips Encourage respect for personal property, camp equipment, and facilities. Ensure the health and safety of all children Create and implement a weekly Day Camp program for children aged 6 - 12, overseeing day-to-day operations of the camp Works with the camp counsellors in planning and implementing camp Responsible for daily camp logistics Supervising scheduled activities Be aware of all safety protocol and government regulations and ensure that the camp falls in line with these requirements. This includes Covid-19 protocols and procedures as well as Online Safety regulations for The Salvation Army. Work cooperatively with the camp staff, church staff and families of those children attending day camp. Attend all staff training/orientation and meetings Document processes and reports as needed and recommendations to resolve issues and problems. Develop relationships with children, using empathy and active listening to encourage happy and welldeveloped children and youth. General Accountabilities Ensure that Day Camp area is tidy in relation to appearance, condition, and safety as recommended by Public Health etc. Perform other relevant duties as assigned, i.e., setup, and camp cleanup. Ensure the highest standard of health and safety for all campers, volunteers, and staff. Assist with ensuring the emotional wellness and personal development of campers. Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Armys health and safety policies and procedures. Support campers to develop socially, mentally, and spiritually. Know and act in accordance with policies and procedures of The Salvation Army to ensure the safety and confidentiality of participants and information. Act in cases of urgency or emergency in alignment with camp policies and procedures. Perform other related duties as required. Working Conditions This is a temporary parttime position based on 30 hours per week. Walking to local parks depending on weather conditions Working environment is in a fast paced and noisy day camp setting both indoor and outdoor in generally agreeable conditions with the following exceptions, exposure to tantrums and noise. This job requires the ability to lift/move 25 lbs. without assistance. This job requires reaching, bending, and stooping frequently, working in a standing position for long periods of time and using a computer. Flexibility in scheduling is required. Normal Hours of Work The hours of work and work schedule will be set by the supervisor as per operational requirements Monday to Friday, day shifts and includes a hour unpaid meal break. Conditions Of Employment Submit as required a Police Record Check (vulnerable sector check) that is acceptable to The Salvation Army in its sole discretion. This position is funded in part through the Canada Summer Jobs Program and the following represents the applicant criteria: Aged 15 to 30 years at the beginning of the employment period; Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; A valid Social Insurance Number; Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations. International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada. Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are ineligible. An ongoing condition of employment is the ability to maintain immigration status to legally remain and work in Canada which is supported by valid immigration documents. Education, Qualifications And Certifications Completion of Secondary School. A current valid Standard First Aid and CPR certificate would be required. Experience And Skilled Knowledge Requirements Minimum of one (1) year prior experience in a day camp setting working with children. Having own computer with reliable internet connection, as file access and meetings may take place online. Alternative combination of education and experience may be considered. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively, patiently, and effectively. Able to help support other camp staff with childrens individual behavioral needs. Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities. Compensation The target hiring range for this position is $18.50 to $23.13 with a maximum of $27.76. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
