Job Description

Position Objective: PETA India is seeking skilled translators and proofreaders to play a crucial role in helping spread the message of animal rights by translating various materials from English into a regional language or occasionally to translate articles or other content from the regional language into English. Languages:English to Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Gujarati, Assamese, Bengali, Konkani, Punjabi, Urdu, and Odia and vice-versa Different translators/proofreaders are sought for each language except where a person has sufficient proficiency in numerous languages. Term of Employment: Contract (Hourly, per project needs) Location: Remote Reports To: Senior Manager – Vernacular Outreach Primary Responsibilities and Duties: Translate content accurately from English to the specified regional language, ensuring the message is clear, impactful, and aligns with PETA India’s values. Appreciate and maintain the purpose, personality and tone of the original message in work, rather than absolute word for word translations where required. Identify and advise on cultural nuances and sensitivities to PETA India where necessary, helping to communicate PETA India’s message effectively, without offense. Work on various types of content as assigned, including campaign materials, website content, social media posts, reports, news releases, letters, legal documents and more. Ensure timely delivery of translated materials, meeting project deadlines, including often very tight or same-day deadlines. Collaborate with various PETA India departments, asking questions where required to understand true meaning of text, and ensuring quality across all translated content. Translate regional content material into English where requested. Proofread content translated by others paying special attention to true meaning, accurate personality, purpose, cultural sensitivities and tone. Handle all content provided for translations with confidentiality and care. Requirements: Native or near-native written and verbal proficiency in one or more of the specified regional languages and equally as excellent proficiency in English. Strong ability to articulate complex ideas, accurately interpret context, and accurately convey the intended meaning, personality and tone of the original message while translating. Strong understanding of grammar and syntax in both the regional language and English. Strong understanding of cultural norms in the relevant region. Ability to meet tight deadlines and work independently. Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times. Thorough knowledge of PETA India campaigns. Supportive position on animal rights. Preferred Qualifications: Formal relevant qualifications a plus. Experience in professional translations a plus.
