Welcome to the forefront of space innovation with Skyroot Aerospace!Purpose of Role:A Composites Methods Engineer specializes in the design, development, and manufacturing processes of composite materials They ensure that composite materials (like carbon fiber, fiberglass, and resins) are effectively integrated into product designs and manufactured efficiently. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the roles and responsibilities of a Composites Methods Engineer. Roles and Responsibilities: 1. Design and DevelopmentDevelop methods for the design and manufacturing of composite materials for components and structures.Work with design teams to ensure composite materials meet the necessary structural, thermal, and durability requirements.Evaluate and analyze product designs for manufacturability and suggest design changes to optimize the use of composite materials.Generate CAD models, technical drawings, and tooling designs for composite components.Provide recommendations to improve product designs, focusing on manufacturability and material performance. 2. Material Selection and Testing Research and select appropriate composite materials (carbon fiber, Kevlar, glass fiber, resins) for different applications.Perform material testing, including tensile, compression, and fatigue testing, to verify that selected materials meet the required standards and specifications.Develop test methods for evaluating the performance of composite structures under various conditions.Analyze and interpret test data to refine material choices and process parameters. 3. Manufacturing Process Development and OptimizationDevelop and improve composite manufacturing processes (e.g., layup, curing, resin infusion, and autoclaving).Optimize production methods to ensure efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and high quality.Create work instructions and technical documentation to guide manufacturing teams in the production of composite materials.Work closely with production teams to troubleshoot and resolve issues related to composite manufacturing.4. Tooling and Equipment ManagementDesign and develop tooling, jigs, and fixtures required for the manufacture of composite components.Coordinate the procurement and maintenance of specialized equipment for composite manufacturing (e.g., autoclaves, vacuum systems, CNC machines). Evaluate tooling designs and make recommendations for improvement based on production feedback.5. Quality Control and AssuranceDevelop and implement quality control processes to ensure that composite materials and components meet industry standards (e.g., AS9100 for aerospace).Inspect and validate composite parts and structures during and after manufacturing.Collaborate with quality assurance teams to create inspection protocols and ensure compliance with safety and performance standards.Conduct failure analysis on defective parts and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence. 6. Project Management and CollaborationManage projects related to composite material development, from concept to final production.Work closely with cross-functional teams, including designers, engineers, and production staff, to meet project goals and timelines.Provide technical support to manufacturing teams during the production process.Prepare technical reports and presentations to communicate project progress and outcomes to stakeholders. 7. Research and InnovationStay updated on emerging trends and technologies in composite materials and manufacturing methods.Conduct research on new materials, fabrication techniques, and potential applications for composites in the industry.Experiment with advanced composites and nanomaterials to improve product performance and reduce weight.Explore automation and digital technologies, such as additive manufacturing and robotics, in composite manufacturing. 8. Compliance and SafetyEnsure all composite materials and processes comply with industry regulations and safety standards.Develop and implement health and safety procedures related to the handling and processing of composite materials.Ensure that the manufacturing processes adhere to environmental regulations and sustainability initiatives.Skills:In-depth knowledge of composite materials and processes (e.g., resin infusion, vacuum bagging, prepreg, and autoclaving).Proficiency in CAD software (such as CATIA, SolidWorks) and simulation tools (FEA).Strong understanding of manufacturing techniques, tools, and equipment for composites.Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot production issues.Knowledge of industry standards (AS9100, ISO9001) and compliance regulations.Strong project management skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team.Qualification:Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.Master’s degree or Ph.D. in a related field (optional, but beneficial for advanced roles and R&D positions).Perks & Benefits:We provide seamless transportation, nourishing meals and elevated wellbeing – Because we believe everyone deserves a smooth ride to success!Note : We also welcome women with career gaps and applicants from non-aerospace or defence sectors who can bring valuable skills and experiences to our team.
