Location: Chennai, Tamil NaduPosition: Senior ResearcherProject description Sustainable MobilityEmissions from the transport sector contribute around 25 per cent of the pollutants (NOx and SOx) in the air, having a wide ranging impact on human health and the environment. Yet, cities across India continue to support the growth of private transport over more sustainable public transit. The project aims to advocate for sustainable transport in Chennai through actions directed at key decision makers in legislative, implementation and enforcement agencies, and citizens. The overarching goal is ‘Zero Emissions, Zero Exclusion, and Zero Road Deaths’. This entails a significant shift away from private car and ICE dominated systems to systems that prioritise smart, shared, renewable energy-based electric mobility and increase the infrastructure and support for walking, cycling, improved and equitable public transport. Road SafetyThere is one fatality every 4 minutes on Indian roads. The World Health Organization (WHO) notes that though India has only one percent of the world’s roads, the country accounts for 10 percent of road accident fatalities. Reversing this worsening trend requires a concerted effort on various fronts – changing user behaviour; stronger legislation that covers aspects of vehicle safety, etc; better enforcement of legislation; proper road design and improved data collection regarding traffic. There is an ongoing effort to strengthen existing road safety legislation. The project aims to advocate for improved road safety in the country, with specific focus on Tamil Nadu (at the state- and district-level), through actions directed at key decision makers in legislative, implementation and enforcement agencies, and road users.
