Currently over 250 researchers are working with WRI India in our offices at Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru.Objective: The primary objective of this consultancy is to prepare a market assessment study on battery circularity in India by 2047. Scope of WorkThe proposed study will cover key components to assess the battery circularity market in India with a horizon of 2047. For each component, the consultant will analyse the current status, projected evolution (from 2035 through 2047), and the broader implications for stakeholders. The scope includes:Battery Demand 2035-2047: From EV & BESS applications.Battery Technology Landscape 2035-2047: Market share of different battery chemistries (under different applications).Battery Reuse Market 2035-2047: Capacity (GWh) of retired batteries going into reuse, market value (USD or INR).Battery Reuse Industry Landscape: Players & their plant capacities (current and announced), technology/processes used, etc.Battery Reuse Technology Landscape: Status of the technology- maturity & efficiency, indigenous availability, research & innovation opportunities, etc.Retired Batteries and Products Trade Landscape: Status of imports and exports of retired batteries, for potential reuse purposes.Economics of Battery Reuse in India: Capital investment requirements by type, operational expenses by type, revenue streams, cashflow projections.Business Models for Battery Reuse: Current status & innovative business model opportunities.Expert profile requirementsExpertise in Clean Energy and Circular Economy: Proven track record in conducting in-depth research and market assessments in the energy transition space, particularly in battery value chains, electric mobility, and energy storage systems.Strong Analytical Capabilities: Demonstrated ability to undertake long-term market forecasting using robust models and scenario analysis as well as capital and operational cost modelling, revenue stream analysis, and investment planning.Multidisciplinary Team: Access to a team of experts with domain knowledge in battery technologies, reuse/recycling processes, industrial economics, policy/regulatory frameworks, and international trade.Experience with Industry & Policy Stakeholders: Prior engagements with government bodies, industry players, think tanks, and multilaterals in India and globally, enabling context-specific and actionable recommendations.Team Requirements1. Team Leader (Principal Consultant) – 15+ Years ExperienceRole: Oversee research design, stakeholder engagement, and final deliverables.Key Skills/Background:Expertise in Battery Tech/Circular Economy: Deep knowledge of EV/BESS battery markets, recycling, and second-life applications. Familiarity with India’s battery ecosystem (policy, industry players, informal sector).Experience in market forecasting, techno-economic modelling, and scenario analysis.Led similar energy storage/circular economy studies for govt/private clients.Worked with automakers, battery manufacturers, policymakers (e.g., NITI Aayog, MNRE).Education: Advanced degree in Energy Engineering, Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering, or Economics.2. Senior Analyst - Battery Technology Specialist – 7-10 Years ExperienceRole: Lead technical & market analysis (chemistry trends, reuse tech, industry mapping).Key Skills/Background:Battery Chemistry & Reuse Tech: Knowledge of battery chemistries (NMC, LFP, solid-state, etc.) and their reuse potential Understanding of dismantling, testing, repurposing processes (lab to commercial scale).Industry Landscape Experience profiling formal/informal players (e.g., recyclers, OEMs, startups)Data Modelling: Ability to forecast demand/supply (GWh), map trade flows, and assess policy impacts.Educational Background: Master's degree in Energy Systems, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or Environmental Management.3. Junior Analyst / Energy Economist – 3-5 Years ExperienceRole: Support data collection, economic modelling, and visualization.Key Skills/Background:Economic & Financial Analysis: Build cost models (CAPEX/OPEX for reuse vs. new batteries).Data & Visualization: Proficient in Excel, Python/R, Tableau/ PowerBI for scenario analysisExperience with secondary data (Bloomberg NEF, IEA, industry reports).Policy Research: Review India’s battery waste rules, import/export policies, incentives.4.
