We are hiring on behalf of a global MNC in the maritime industry. The company has a strong track record of delivering complex newbuilding and vessel conversion projects, and we are supporting them in building a high-calibre technical team in Mumbai. We are currently looking for an experienced Plan Approval Engineer – Mechanical to join their Newbuilding & Conversion Projects team. This role offers the opportunity to work closely with international stakeholders, shipyards, and engineering teams to evaluate vessel design and ensure compliance with specifications and global standards. Plan Approval Engineer – Mechanical (Based in Mumbai, India) Your Role: As Plan Approval Engineer, you will play a lead role in reviewing and coordinating technical documentation and engineering plans for new shipbuilding projects—particularly gas carriers and tankers. You will act as the technical interface between the owner’s team and shipyards, ensuring all submitted drawings and designs meet project, regulatory, and classification requirements. Key Responsibilities: Lead and manage the plan approval process for newbuild vessels, ensuring alignment with design specifications, rules, and regulations. Review and approve mechanical engineering plans, designs, and technical documents, identifying any gaps or non-compliance. Coordinate with internal teams, classification societies, shipyards, and equipment makers to resolve technical issues efficiently. Provide expert advice and technical guidance throughout the design and approval phases. Participate in risk assessments, maker selection, and yard evaluations, ensuring alignment with project and client requirements. Proactively identify design issues and recommend improvements or modifications. Stay updated with the latest in engineering technologies, standards, and best practices for ship design and construction. Support negotiations and decision-making related to shipbuilding contracts and technical evaluations. Maintain clear and consistent documentation and reporting throughout the approval process. Your Profile: Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. 8+ years of experience in design and engineering of tankships or 5+ years for gas carriers. Proven experience in plan approval, either with a class society, ship owner/manager, or charterer. Minimum 2 years of experience as a technical interface with a shipyard during the design review phase of a gas carrier, or 5+ years for other tankers. Strong command of technical and business English, with excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, SharePoint, and other relevant engineering tools. Experience in newbuilding site supervision, ship repair/upgrades, or contract negotiation will be viewed favorably. Prior experience with gas carrier projects is highly preferred.
