Team Leadership & Development: Lead and manage a team of open-source developers, setting clear goals and fostering a collaborative, high-performance environment. Provide mentorship and guidance to team members to ensure professional growth and technical expertise. Establish and enforce best practices for open-source development, code reviews, documentation, and testing. Cultivate a positive culture around open-source contributions, encouraging innovation, collaboration, and transparency. Open-Source Strategy & Planning: Define the technical roadmap for open-source projects, ensuring alignment with the company’s overall product and business strategy. Evaluate and prioritize which open-source projects to launch or contribute to, based on their strategic value to the company and the community. Identify key open-source technologies and initiatives that can help shape the future of the organization’s products and services. Code Contribution & Quality Control: Oversee the development and release of high-quality open-source software, ensuring it meets community standards and best practices. Ensure all contributions are properly reviewed, documented, and tested, and that the projects are easily accessible and maintainable. Lead and contribute to code reviews, ensuring a focus on maintainability, performance, and security in all open-source projects. Maintain rigorous version control practices and ensure contributions follow the correct workflow (e.g., GitHub, GitLab, or other platforms). Community Engagement & Advocacy: Act as the primary point of contact for external developers and contributors to open-source projects. Build and nurture relationships with open-source communities, advocating for the company’s contributions and gaining feedback from the community. Represent the organization at open-source conferences, events, and online forums, promoting the company’s open-source efforts. Manage the public-facing communication of open-source releases, updates, and news, ensuring that the company’s contributions are well-received and visible. Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with product managers, software engineers, and marketing teams to ensure the integration of open-source efforts with commercial products and services. Collaborate with other teams to identify opportunities for open-source contributions that align with business goals and address customer needs. Coordinate with legal, security, and compliance teams to ensure open-source contributions meet licensing and regulatory requirements. Monitoring & Reporting: Track the success and impact of open-source projects, including usage metrics, community involvement, and code quality. Monitor trends and developments in the open-source ecosystem to ensure that the organization remains at the forefront of innovation. Report on open-source project progress and successes to senior management and stakeholders, providing insights and recommendations. Security & Compliance: Ensure that open-source contributions are compliant with relevant licensing and intellectual property policies. Implement processes to monitor and address security vulnerabilities within open-source projects. Required Qualifications: Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (or equivalent work experience). Experience: Experience in software development, with a strong focus on open-source projects. Experience managing or leading open-source initiatives, including managing teams or leading technical projects. Proven track record of contributing to or managing open-source software projects. Deep understanding of version control systems (e.g., Git) and open-source development tools (e.g., GitHub, GitLab). Experience with a variety of programming languages, frameworks, and technologies commonly used in open-source software (e.g., Python, JavaScript, Java, Go, Rust, etc.). Skills & Knowledge: Strong technical expertise in open-source development, including familiarity with best practices, licensing models, and community standards. Experience with cloud technologies (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and containerization tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes). Strong knowledge of software architecture, design patterns, and agile methodologies. Excellent communication skills, both technical and non-technical, with the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders. Demonstrated ability to drive community engagement, maintain relationships with external contributors, and foster a collaborative environment.
