Senior Manager – System Design & Costing (BESS)Location: MumbaiReporting To: Pre-sales - Lead (BESS)About the CompanyWaaree is expanding its Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) business across utility-scale and commercial & industrial segments. As BESS projects scale in size and complexity, accurate system design, technical configuration, and cost modelling for the entire BESS project is critical for winning bids and protecting margins.About the RoleThe Senior Manager – System Design & Costing (BESS) will own end-to-end system architecture, technical configuration, and cost modelling for BESS projects, covering battery systems, PCS, balance-of-system design & equipment. This role acts as the single owner of technical and cost assumptions during the bid and proposal stage, ensuring that solutions offered are technically compliant, commercially accurate, and executable.ResponsibilitiesSystem Design & ArchitectureDefine overall system architecture for BESS projects across utility-scale and C&I applicationsFinalise technical configuration covering:Battery containers / racksPCS selection and sizingTransformers, switchgear, protection systems, metering, and auxiliary systems up to the POIOwn sizing philosophy, design assumptions, and technical compliance for bidsReview and approve SLDs, layouts, and system-level design documentationCosting & Commercial SupportOwn complete project-level cost models covering:BESS equipment and auxiliariesElectrical systems and infrastructure from PCS up to the POIInstallation, testing, commissioning, logistics, duties, and contingenciesPrepare and validate BOMs, cost sheets, and pricing inputs for bidsWork closely with sourcing and procurement teams to validate vendor pricingSupport sales teams with margin analysis and sensitivity scenariosStandardisation & Value EngineeringDevelop standard system configurations and reference designs for faster bid turnaroundDrive value engineering initiatives to optimise system cost while meeting performance and safety requirementsCreate cost benchmarks for different project sizes, grid conditions, and use casesBid Review & Risk ManagementParticipate in bid review meetings to validate technical and cost assumptionsIdentify key technical, execution, and commercial risks related to design and POI integrationProvide recommendations on risk mitigation and pricing strategyCross-Functional CoordinationWork closely with pre-sales, sales, sourcing, and project execution teamsEnsure smooth technical handover from bid stage to executionSupport execution teams during early project stages to maintain design intent and cost assumptionsKnowledge Management & Team DevelopmentBuild internal capability in BESS system design and costingMentor junior engineers and pre-sales team membersDevelop internal design standards, costing templates, and technical playbookQualificationsBachelor’s degree in Electrical / Power / Energy Engineering (Master’s preferred)8–12 years of experience in power systems, renewables, or energy infrastructureAt least 3–5 years of direct experience in BESS system design, solution engineering, or pre-salesStrong exposure to system integration and costing up to the Point of InjectionRequired SkillsBESS system architecture and operating philosophyBattery technologies (LFP / NMC), degradation, and lifecycle modellingPCS characteristics and system limitsElectrical systems, protection philosophy, and grid interconnection up to POIApplicable standards, certifications, and grid requirementsPreferred SkillsExperience with project management tools and methodologiesStrong analytical and problem-solving skillsExcellent communication and interpersonal skills
