Position SummaryThe CDI Specialist is responsible for improving the quality and accuracy of clinical documentation within the healthcare system. This role serves as a liaison between providers, coders, and compliance teams, ensuring that medical records accurately reflect patient conditions, severity of illness, and risk of mortality. A key focus of this position is provider education, guiding clinicians on documentation best practices to support patient care, compliance, and appropriate reimbursement.Key ResponsibilitiesDocumentation ReviewAnalyze provider documentation for completeness, accuracy, and specificity.Identify gaps, inconsistencies, or ambiguities requiring clarification.Provider Education & TrainingConduct one-on-one and group education sessions with physicians and advanced practice providers.Develop specialty-specific training materials, tip sheets, and quick reference guides.Provide ongoing feedback using provider-specific data (query rates, denial trends, quality metrics).Clinical QueriesIssue compliant queries to providers when documentation requires clarification.Collaborate with providers to ensure timely and accurate responses.Compliance & QualityEnsure documentation meets CMS, Joint Commission, and organizational standards.Support accurate coding for quality reporting, risk adjustment, and value-based care initiatives.CollaborationPartner with coding, billing, and quality teams to align documentation with organizational goals.Participate in multidisciplinary meetings to address documentation challenges.QualificationsEducation:Clinical background preferred.HIM or RHIA/RHIT certification may be considered.Experience:5+ years of clinical or coding experience in acute care settings.Prior CDI experience strongly preferred.Skills:Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS, DRG, and HCC coding.Excellent communication and teaching skills.Ability to interpret clinical data and translate into documentation requirements.Proficiency with EHR systems and Microsoft Office tools.Performance MetricsReduction in provider query rates over time.Improvement in case mix index (CMI) and risk adjustment scores.Increased provider satisfaction with CDI support.Compliance with regulatory documentation standards.Career ImpactThis role directly influences:Patient Care – ensuring the medical record reflects the true clinical picture.Financial Health – supporting accurate reimbursement and reducing denials.Organizational Reputation – improving publicly reported quality outcomes.#CDISpecialist #ClinicalDocumentation #ProviderEducation #HealthcareCompliance #MedicalCoding #RevenueCycleManagement #RiskAdjustment #QualityReporting #HCCCoding #DRGCoding #ValueBasedCare #PatientCareQuality #HealthcareJobs #HealthInformationManagement #ClinicalExcellence #HealthcareLeadership
