SQL Server Support Engineer I Role Summary The SQL Server Support Engineer I is responsible for day to day support and operational management of SQL Server environments that underpin the Elevation Builder platform. They focus on monitoring, maintenance, incident resolution, and implementing well defined changes under guidance from senior team members. Key Responsibilities Write and optimize SQL queries for reporting, data extracts, troubleshooting, and minor feature enhancements. Perform routine database maintenance , including: Executing and monitoring database backups and restores Verifying SQL Server versions , patch levels, and cumulative updates against standards Running DBCC checks and basic integrity/health checks Support day to day SQL Server administration , such as: Managing log growth , database file sizes, and free space Monitoring performance using tools like Activity Monitor, Profiler/Extended Events (as directed), and performance dashboards Managing logins , basic permissions, and users under defined security policies Build and maintain database objects under supervision, including: Stored procedures , views , functions , and queries Creating and updating indexes and statistics based on performance findings and senior guidance Support Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) : Deploying and updating reports Managing data sources and subscriptions Basic troubleshooting of report failures and performance issues Support Microsoft Windows Server environments hosting SQL: Basic OS level checks (CPU, memory, disk space, services) Applying standard OS patches and reboots following runbooks Coordinating with infrastructure teams on incidents and change windows Monitoring and incident response : Responding to alerts related to SQL availability, performance, backups, and SSRS Performing initial triage, documenting findings, and escalating when appropriate Updating tickets and documentation for recurring issues and resolutions Documentation & standards : Maintaining runbooks, standard operating procedures, and environment documentation Ensuring changes follow defined change management processes Required Qualifications & Skills 5+ years of experience supporting Microsoft SQL Server in a production or mission critical environment. 8-12 Years experience overall. Solid understanding of: SQL query writing (SELECT, JOINs, GROUP BY, basic DML) Core database objects (tables, views, stored procedures, indexes, statistics) Basic backup/restore concepts (full, differential, log) Familiarity with: Microsoft Windows Server (services, event logs, performance counters) SSMS (SQL Server Management Studio) and standard monitoring tools SSRS basics (report deployment, subscriptions, data sources) Strong troubleshooting mindset, willingness to learn, and ability to follow detailed runbooks. Good written and verbal communication skills for collaborating with application teams, DBAs, and support staff. Preferred Qualifications Exposure to high availability SQL features (e.g., AlwaysOn, failover clusters) and their operational impact. Experience with automation/scripting (PowerShell, TSQL jobs) for routine tasks. Experience working in ITIL style environments (incident, problem, change management).
