General purpose of the position This position is responsible for implementing Humane World for Animals India’s efforts to shift the paradigm in biomedical research and regulatory testing toward non-animal approaches Essential duties and responsibilities Regulatory testing 1. Analyzes Indian frameworks for chemicals, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and other regulated products and propose reforms to replace or reduce reliance on animals for safety and efficacy testing and harmonization with global standards, including drafting technical amendments, public comments, reports, briefings, data analyses, and other documents as needed. 2. Supports the work of the Animal-Free Safety Assessment (AFSA) Collaboration, as needed. Research 3. Analyzes Indian and global biomedical research funding strategies, programs, past calls and awarded grants (governmental, charitable, private foundations) to determine baseline funding and trends for animal- and non-animal approaches for India. 4. Develop scientific justifications and position papers supporting NAM use in defined contexts of use (CoU) in biomedical research towards better understanding and embracing human biology-based non-animal approaches in research ecosystem 5. Support global R&T team as required Overarching 6. Prepares scientific analyses, reports, briefings, review articles, blogs and other public-facing communications as needed to advance the above duties. 7. Organizes and presents at periodic scientific webinars, workshops, and other events, as needed. 8. Maintains up-to-date knowledge regarding Indian and major international research to develop non-animal technologies for testing and research, case studies demonstrating successful applications, and emerging evidence from the peer-reviewed literature regarding limitations of animal models, and provides subject matter support to public policy campaign, communications, fundraising or other personnel, as needed. 9. A PhD or other professional degree in biology, toxicology, or related field, required. 2. At least 3 years work experience in chemical safety assessment, vaccine testing, biomedical research or equivalent role, required. 3. Experience or familiarity with modern, non-animal approaches in predictive biology and risk assessment, preferably in chemicals or vaccine testing space. 4. Familiarity with Indian legal frameworks and processes for chemicals and other regulated products, strongly preferred. Necessary knowledge, skills and abilities 1. Commitment to animal protection issues and the ability to professionally advocate for Humane World for Animals science-policy positions. 2. Ability to work and multitask in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines; self-motivated and proactive. 3. Demonstrated critical thinking and analytical skills, as well as the ability to handle complex situations and demonstrate sound judgment and problem-solving. 4. Superior communications (oral and written) and interpersonal skills, including the ability to quickly absorb, analyze and communicate complex subject matter to a variety of audiences. 5. Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team. 6. Technical proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint, Teams, Planner, etc.). 7. The ability to work long hours should a crisis situation arise. 8. Willingness to travel within India, and occasionally internationally.
