Interpreter Skills LeaderOrganization: Americans Against Language Barriers (AALB) Location: Remote Type: 1099 ContractorAbout AALBAmericans Against Language Barriers is an award-winning 501(c)(3) nonprofit that qualifies medical interpreters, conducts language access advocacy, and works to dismantle the systemic barriers that prevent limited English proficient and Deaf/Hard of Hearing individuals from receiving equitable healthcare. Language access is a civil right, grounded in Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, the Supreme Court's ruling in Lau v. Nichols, and Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act. AALB operates a comprehensive medical interpreter training and qualification program, having qualified over 3,000 interpreters to date. We also partner with healthcare institutions to assess and credential their interpreter workforces, build language access infrastructure, and hold systems accountable for providing equitable care to every patient regardless of the language they speak.The RoleInterpreter Skills Leaders are a critical part of AALB's certificate program. They guide students through skill-building exercises, provide real-time feedback on interpreting performance, and model the professional conduct expected of working medical interpreters. This role is ideal for experienced interpreters who are passionate about developing the next generation of language access professionals. Most classes take place outside of standard business hours, including evenings and weekends.ResponsibilitiesLead and facilitate interpreter skills labs, practice sessions, and role-play exercises with studentsProvide constructive, detailed feedback on student performance in areas including accuracy, register, protocol, and ethicsContribute to a rigorous, supportive, and professional learning environmentCommunicate regularly with AALB team members regarding student progress and concernsRequirementsCertificate of training in interpretation representing at least 40 hoursExtremely high proficiency in spoken and written English and at least one other languageAt least 3 years of consistent professional experience as an interpreter, with medical interpreting strongly preferredStrong understanding of complex linguistic dynamics such as register shifting, code-switching, interference patterns, and false cognates in English and at least one other languageMastery of the NCIHC Code of Ethics and Standards of PracticeAbility to teach, mentor, and deliver feedback effectively in a virtual classroom settingReliable computer with a strong, stable internet connection and high quality audio/video capabilitiesFlexible schedule with availability for evening and weekend sessionsExcellent communication and interpersonal skillsStrong critical thinking skillsWilling to complete the AALB training program and score within the top 10% of students as a condition of maintaining an active contractPreferred Qualifications100+ hours of training in medical interpretation, in a combination of introductory and continuing educationExperience interpreting in clinical or community healthcare settingsPrior experience leading trainings, workshops, or skills-based instruction
