About the role: The Controller owns a portfolio of client accounts and steps into most of the client-facing controller work currently handled by the owner. This role is responsible for accurate, timely accounting; clear financial reporting; and proactive communication with small- and mid-sized business clients. The Controller must be comfortable working remotely, coordinating with a distributed team, and leading conversations with U.S.-based business owners. What you'll do: Primary accounting contact for assigned clients, providing ongoing client management and advisory . Lead recurring client calls (monthly / bi-weekly) to review financials and explain results in clear, non-technical language . Identify key issues (cash flow, margins, variances, compliance) and recommend actionable next steps . Own full-cycle accounting and month-end close , including reconciliations, revenue recognition, AP/AR review, payroll entries, accruals, and prepaids . Prepare accurate monthly financial statements (P&L, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow ) and management reports . Maintain strong workpapers and documentation supporting all balances and adjustments. Work primarily in QuickBooks Online , adhering to firm SOPs for bookkeeping and close. Identify and resolve errors in client books; lead cleanup and correction projects . Recommend process improvements and automations to increase efficiency and consistency. Collaborate with bookkeeping teams (onshore and nearshore) to ensure timely, high-quality delivery . Review delegated work and provide constructive feedback . Consistently use and contribute to firm templates, checklists, and SOPs . Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance , or equivalent practical experience . Minimum 5 years of hands-on accounting experience , with progressive growth up to Senior Accountant role , including month-end close ownership . Direct experience preparing monthly financial statements for small to mid-sized businesses . Skills: Strong proficiency with QuickBooks Online (multi-entity, classes, projects or similar). Solid Excel/Google Sheets skills (vlookup/index-match, pivot tables, basic modeling). Solid understanding of U.S. GAAP for small businesses. Demonstrated ability to clean up messy books (unreconciled accounts, misclassifications, prior-period issues).
