Job Description

This Technical Manager position is a member of the Global General Industrial R&D technology leadership team and is responsible for leading all sales support and product and platform development activities for liquid & powder based coating systems for Sherwin-Williams’s General Industrial Business in the Mexico region and collaborates with other members of the LATAM & USCA Leadership Team on projects applicable to the LATAM, US, Canada, and Mexico for regional and global customers. Works collaboratively with Sales and Marketing to support and secure new business as well as maintain current customer base.Partners with Regional Purchasing and PCG Raw Materials Manager to support raw material selection and cost saving projects for the regionIs a member of the North America Technical Leadership team; coordinates technical activities in conjunction with the liquid & powder group leaders and other North America technical managers to ensure development and translation of technology from and into the various North America liquid and powder plants.Champions and drives best practices, institutes project management and portfolio management with business leaders and R&D teams, hires, trains, and guides people developmentDevelops key customer and supplier relationships that support existing as new business maintenance and growth.Promotes a safe work environment by driving safety practices, safe equipment utilization and maintenance in the laboratories.Drives and capture intellectual property developmentsCoordinates liquid and powder technical activities within the key market segments to ensure product development and maintains product portfolios to support new business and existing customers in the North America region along with key liquid platforms for the supported market segments.Manages and deploys resources across the segment groups to efficiently and effectively deliver all product and technology goals and services.Leads a market and customer centric workplace culture for innovative solutions, execution excellence, and continuous improvement.Holds the segment teams accountable for implementing and achieving technology, product development, and service-related goals and objectives.Completes, delivers, and oversees individual performance management reviews, succession planning, and establishes employee professional development goals to support future business needsFORMAL EDUCATION: Required:Bachelor’s of Science Degree including 2 semesters each of General Chemistry and Organic ChemistryPreferred:Masters or higher degree KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE:Required: Minimum 10 years industry experience in the development of formulated coatings, plastics or inks products and polymer development or materials science and intellectual property management Minimum of 3 years technical or laboratory management experience. Strong strategic perspective and ability to deal with complex requirements and set priorities Structured, data-based rational thinker and strong execution skills. Strong market knowledge, customer experience, new product commercialization and demonstrated relationships with Sales and Marketing groups. Knowledge of related regional markets, product stewardship, and regulatory requirements. Excellent leadership, organizational and interpersonal skills. Excellent project management and problem-solving skills. English Speaking, strong communication skills, both orally and written. Preferred Six Sigma practical knowledge and experiences desired.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Must be able to sit, stand, hear, and see on a constant basis. Must be able to walk, write, and type on a frequent basis. Must be able to bend, carry, reach, push, and pull on an occasional basis. Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing. May work indoors and outdoors as needed. Exposure to heat up to 120 degrees and cold to 0 degrees. Must be able to operate a computer and communicate via the telephone. May work in areas where toxic, flammable, and hazardous materials are present. May be exposed to varying amounts of dust and dirt. Work surfaces may include concrete. Employee must be able to tolerate non-toxic paint odors and be able to wear a respirator as required. Employee must be able to operate a computer and communicate via telephone. May work in areas where noise level is such that hearing protection is required. Some travel to other locations, meetings and/or seminars is required. Must be able to travel internationally. TECHNICAL/SKILL REQUIREMENTS Required:Technical understanding and knowledge in industrial coatings chemistryCoatings formulation skillsCoatings application testing General computer skills – word, excel, powerpoint, emails Preferred Design of Experiments (DOE)Math and Statistic Software – JMP or MinitabIP Management and Patenting Polymer resin experiences Travel Requirements: Domestic and some International Travel estimated at 30%. This includes regional customer visits as well as International travel to various USCA & LATAM Sherwin Williams locations to support General Industrial technical leadership initiatives. This position manages two (2) laboratories in the Nuevo Leon area (Santa Catarina & Cienega), expectation is to have office hours in both laboratories weekly. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s of Science Degree including 2 semesters each of General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry Minimum 10 years industry experience in the development of formulated coatings, plastics or inks products and polymer development or materials science and intellectual property management Minimum of 3 years technical or laboratory management experience. Must be legally authorized to visit US.
