Job Description

Overview The Database Administrator is responsible for administering, maintaining, and supporting the company’s database environments. This role helps ensure database availability, performance, security, backup/recovery, monitoring, and documentation for on-premises and cloud platforms (e.g., Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services). The DBA partners with application, infrastructure, and analytics teams to deliver reliable, scalable data services that support business operations and reporting. Responsibilities Administers and supports Microsoft SQL Server databases including configuration, patching, and routine maintenance. Provisions and configures database instances (on-prem and cloud) and maintain standard configurations, jobs, and schedules. Implements and validates backup/restore processes; perform recovery testing and support disaster recovery procedures. Monitors database health, performance, and capacity; establish baselines and tune queries and indexes using execution plans and DMVs. Assists with database upgrades, migrations, refreshes, and decommissions; coordinate maintenance windows and follow change management practices. Supports high availability components (e.g., Always On availability groups, clustering, replication) and participate in failover testing as assigned. Implements and maintain database security controls including access management, least-privilege, encryption, auditing, and vulnerability remediation. Maintains monitoring/alerting and operational documentation; respond to incidents, troubleshoot issues, and escalate appropriately. Partners with development teams to support deployments, review schema changes, and troubleshoot application/data issues in on-prem and cloud architectures. Automates repeatable operational tasks using scripting (PowerShell/T-SQL) and contribute to standard runbooks and operational improvements. Qualifications Education/Training Required and Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in business, computer science, or MIS or a combination of education and relevant work experience. Experience Required and Preferred: Minimum of 5 years of experience administering and supporting Microsoft SQL Server databases in a production environment, including backup/recovery, performance tuning, and troubleshooting availability and connectivity issues. Exposure to cloud database services and tooling (e.g., Azure SQL, Managed Instance, AWS RDS) preferred. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA's) Required and Preferred: KSA #1: Working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server administration (configuration, security, maintenance, monitoring). KSA #2: Proficiency with T-SQL for troubleshooting, indexing, and performance analysis. KSA #3: Ability to troubleshoot database issues (performance, availability, connectivity) using execution plans, DMVs, logs, and monitoring tools. KSA #4: Knowledge of database security best practices (least privilege, encryption, auditing, patching, role-based access). KSA #5: Familiarity with Windows Server fundamentals and basic networking concepts (DNS, ports, firewalls, certificates). KSA #6: Understanding of HA/DR concepts (Always On, clustering, replication) and ability to follow runbooks for recovery/failover activities. KSA #7: Ability to collaborate cross-functionally and communicate technical information clearly (written and verbal). KSA #8: Working knowledge of change management and incident management practices; ability to document procedures and keep runbooks current.
