Please apply for this job as soon as you can, if interested.* We are looking for two enthusiastic and conscientious Locum Speciality Dentists to join our professional and supportive team in Oral Surgery at the Birmingham Dental Hospital. These posts are 12-month locum contracts to cover maternity leave. The successful candidates will work under the direction of the Consultants in Oral Surgery and will undertake all aspects of oral surgery dental care as well as providing an emergency dental service based at the hospital. The Oral Surgery team comprises Consultants, Specialist Dentists, Speciality Dentists, Core Trainees, and Dental Registrars, along with dedicated dental nurses and administrative support. The post holders are expected to be professional, caring, and possess excellent clinical skills. They should deliver patient-centred care aligned with the latest guidance, with outstanding communication skills and the ability to present ideas clearly to both patients and colleagues. Main duties of the jobPerform clinical duties within the Oral Surgery and Urgent Care Department, involving outpatient and day-case care of patients at Birmingham Dental Hospital. Be responsible to the Head of Service in Oral Surgery. Carry out outpatient oral surgery procedures, including consultation clinics and demand-driven sessions, utilizing local anesthesia, sedation, and general anesthesia techniques. Be prepared to work across all areas within Oral Surgery and Urgent Care. Discharge clinical duties in accordance with Trust Policies and Procedures. Occasionally perform additional duties during emergencies and unforeseen circumstances. Be available outside normal rostered duties for essential commitments to ensure continuity of patient care. Handle departmental administration and routine correspondence with referring practitioners, with secretarial support available. Participate fully in hospital/departmental Quality Assurance, Clinical Audit, and Clinical Governance programs. Study Leave and support are granted at the discretion of the Clinical Director, based on advice from the responsible Consultant. Postgraduate courses are organized regionally and within the Dental Hospital, with monthly teaching and training afternoons held at the hospital. Advice on postgraduate education and career progression in the specialty is available. The Birmingham Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry are research-active, offering excellent facilities. However, this role is primarily service-based, with no specific research requirement. Management and Leadership Undertake other duties appropriate to the grade, as agreed with the Head of Service for Oral Surgery. Contribute to minimizing the Trust’s environmental impact through recycling, turning off unused equipment, reducing paper use, and reporting faults. Ensure training and development needs are met. Key Relationships Establish effective working relationships with Divisional Medical Directors, lead clinicians, Executive Directors, senior managers, HR Business Partners, NHSE&I, Health Education West Midlands, and local universities. Terms and Conditions of Service The post follows the Terms and Conditions for Specialty Doctors in England 2021, with salary based on experience. It is a non-resident post with no on-call requirement. Limited on-site parking is available; nearby public transport options exist. BCHC is committed to equal opportunities.
