Job overviewThe Whittington Integrated Care Organisation (ICO) is inviting applications for the position of Consultants in General Anaesthesia. These roles include both a replacement due to retirement and a newly created position. We are looking to appoint enthusiastic and dynamic consultants eager to join the anaesthetic team at Whittington Health. The posts are required for the delivery of high quality general anaesthetic care for patients attending for variety of surgical procedures at the hospital. We provide surgical services for general surgery, orthopaedics, gynaecology and urology. We are a centre for bariatric surgery and perform approximately 200 cases per annum. Obstetric Anaesthesia cover is provided for the Maternity Department for approximately 3600 deliveries per year. There is, in addition, some paediatric work. There will be some flexibility in the type of lists performed, and these lists can be tailored to an individual’s preference and clinical interests. However, our main area of need is for the pre-operative assessment clinic (POA) and spinal surgery. Candidates must be on the GMC’s Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at time of interview. Detailed job description and main responsibilitiesDuties of the post The post holder will be performing a 10 PA (programmed activity) job, with approx. 8 PAs for direct clinical care, with 2.0 PAs given for supporting programmed activities initially. The on-call commitment is 1:12 (= 0.5PAs). Consideration will be given to increasing SPA: DCC allocation at job planning and review of non-clinical responsibilities. There will be some flexibility in the type of lists performed, and these lists can be tailored to an individual’s preference and clinical interests. Flexibility may be required in the event of last minute staff shortages to ensure adequate skill mix and cover for lists. The timetable and commitment would be appropriately amended for an individual who wished to work part time, in line with national agreements. The theatre sessions will include fixed and flexible lists, which are used to cover consultant leave, urgent lists (utilised for cancer surgery and other urgent cases) or trauma and emergency lists. We are particularly interested in consultants who can work flexibly and adapt to new working practices. This can involve, for example, a session dedicated to pre-operative assessment unit and sessions as “consultant of the day”, in a troubleshooting role, ensuring adequate anaesthetic cover for scheduled lists and emergency procedures on a given day. The successful candidate would therefore be expected to possess, and maintain to a high standard, a wide range of anaesthetic skills appropriate to all specialities represented at Whittington Health. It is expected that the post holders will adhere to the GMC good conduct and professional standards, as well as those set by the Royal College of Anaesthetists and the Association of Anaesthetists for the speciality. Supporting PAs include time for teaching and training, continuing professional development (CPD), audit and governance activity, personal management including job planning and appraisal and contributions to departmental management. Any timetable agreed with the successful applicants will be kept under regular review and will be subject to annual job plan review to ensure it remains within the 10 PA contract. The appointee will also be expected to play a role in educating postgraduate doctors and nurses in all specialties. The successful candidates for this post will be expected to participate in undergraduate teaching, including acting as an undergraduate examiner, and support and facilitate research activities as appropriate.
