Collect blood using good judgment, reasonable and prudent care, and according to policies and procedures, including but not limited to the following: Check two patient identifiers and ensure a complete match between orders, labels, and patient verbal response before and after collection. Once the patient has been called, ensure the safety of the patient at all times. Avoid leaving the patient alone. Use hand hygiene procedures according to lab guidelines. Select appropriate specimen collection equipment. Select an appropriate site for blood collection. Tie tourniquet and prepare the site for venipuncture. Collect specimen according to the order of draw. Ensure a safe collection by adhering to all safety protocols, such as needle stabilization during draw. Ensure adequate mixing of the specimen in the tube by inversion. Label specimens in the presence of the patient. Package and transport specimens appropriately for in-house and/or MGH Boston lab testing. Batch specimens and file manifest for transport to MGH Boston Core Lab. Monitor the patient, ensure bleeding has stopped, and the patient is stable. Verbally give patient post-draw instructions on wound care. Additional responsibilities include reviewing standard questions prior to collection, maintaining patient privacy and HIPAA compliance, providing additional services with proper training, managing clerical duties, maintaining inventory, and adhering to safety and dress code policies. Candidates should have familiarity with the metric system, basic anatomy and physiology, aseptic technique, cardiovascular system knowledge, and standard precautions. Effective communication, attention to detail, compassionate care, emergency recognition, physical ability to perform tasks, and computer skills are required.
