This strategic post plays a central part in shaping and delivering effective, sustainable waste services across the city. This position holds full accountability for managing the department, driving innovation, and supporting Birmingham’s environmental goals. Key Responsibilities Leading the development and delivery of waste logistics and collection strategies aligned with wider sustainability and waste management objectives. Managing operational functions including fleet management, depot activities, and route optimisation to ensure efficient, compliant, and reliable service delivery. Driving service transformation projects that improve quality Establishing and monitoring KPIs to assess operational performance, identify trends, and support continuous improvement. Promoting sustainable practices within logistics and collections, contributing to recycling, carbon reduction, and environmental targets. Overseeing budget development and financial performance, with a focus on cost control, transparency, and value for money. Building strong working relationships with internal departments, community stakeholders, contractors, and regulatory bodies. Ensuring adherence to health and safety standards, environmental legislation, and internal risk management policies. Creating a supportive, high-performing environment by developing, mentoring, and empowering a multidisciplinary team. Enhancing customer experience through clear communication, responsive services, and proactive engagement with residents and businesses. Ideal Candidate Profile Demonstrates significant experience in managing complex operational services, particularly in waste management, logistics, or environmental services. Brings a strong understanding of regulatory frameworks, sustainability principles, and public service governance. Has a proven record of delivering strategic and operational improvements, including service redesign and transformation. Possesses strong financial management skills, including budget control and reporting. Communicates effectively and builds collaborative relationships across diverse stakeholder groups.
