ContextWM5G is looking for an experienced Business Development Manager (BDM) from the Health & Care tech sector to lead the work to secure new NHS 'social care customers and win significant new funding/revenue to scale the benefits that we deliver. The BDM will lead on revenue generation, strategic partnerships, and market expansion, playing a key role in scaling our innovative health & care solutions that have been successfully launched in collaboration with NHS and social care partners.WM5G Limited was formed six years ago as a leading digital connectivity, innovation, and transformation business. The company is a subsidiary of the WMCA and is governed by an independent board and subject to usual audits and company accounts.Since then, the company has successfully led pioneering health and care technology trials – including early bowel cancer diagnosis, connected ambulances, and remote care home monitoring.In 2023-24, WM5G secured £10m of funding to scale-up remote monitoring, community diagnosis, and prevention trials into live clinical services, working in partnership with the West Midlands’ three NHS Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) to support over 7,000 citizens.As we transition from a programme-based approach to a structured business model, we require a commercially driven BDM to lead business development efforts, secure new revenue and secure long-term contracts, to grow benefit delivery for citizens, NHS and social care employees and establish WM5G as a key partner in the UK’s healthcare ecosystem.About this RoleThe Business Development Manager will be responsible for developing and executing commercial strategies to on-board new customers and win new contracts and revenue to grow WM5G’s benefit delivery and market presence. The role holder will be expected to own a revenue target and then lead planning and execution to find, engage and win new business to extend benefit delivery, working closely with the Health & Care Director and MD.The Business Development Manager will lead sales pipeline development, stakeholder engagement, bid and tender management, and contract negotiations. The role requires an entrepreneurial mindset with a deep understanding of the UK healthcare landscape, including NHS procurement and commissioning.The Business Development Manager will play a central role in expanding WM5G’s footprint in the health and care market by identifying commercial opportunities and driving strategic partnerships and winning material new revenue and contracts. The role will focus on securing high-value contracts, fostering relationships with key NHS and private sector stakeholders, and ensuring the sustainability and scalability of WM5G’s healthcare services. The BDM will collaborate closely with internal teams to ensure business development aligns with operational and strategic priorities while maintaining compliance and commercial viability. The role will report directly to the Director of Health & Care.AccountabilitiesStrategic Sales and Revenue Growtho Develop and implement a robust sales strategy to achieve a £1m revenue target within the first year.o Identify and pursue new business opportunities through market research, networking, and proactive engagement with NHS commissioners, ICBs, local authorities, and private healthcare providers.o Lead the development of high-value proposals, bids, and tenders, ensuring alignment with NHS and social care priorities.o Own and manage the full sales lifecycle, from prospecting to contract close, ensuring a structured approach to lead generation, conversion, and retention.o Establish commercial frameworks for existing and new service offerings, including pricing models, SLAs, and partnership agreements.Stakeholder Engagement and Relationship Managemento Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including NHS providers, local authorities, and private sector partners.o Act as the primary commercial interface between WM5G and healthcare organisations, ensuring alignment with their strategic objectives.o Work in collaboration with operations teams to ensure seamless service delivery post-sale.o Represent WM5G at industry events, conferences, and networking forums to increase brand visibility and credibility.Commercial Process Development and Executiono Implement and manage a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system to track leads, opportunities, and pipeline performance.o Develop a structured approach to contract negotiation, ensuring commercial terms align with business objectives and financial targets.o Monitor and analyse market trends, competitor activity, and policy developments to identify growth opportunities.o Work with Finance to forecast revenue, track performance against targets, and adjust strategies accordingly.Bid and Tender Managemento Lead the preparation and submission of high-quality bids and tenders to secure NHS and local authority contracts.o Develop compelling business cases, leveraging data and insights to demonstrate impact and return on investment.Collaborate with technical and operational teams to ensure bids reflect WM5G’s service capabilities and capacity.o Maintain an active pipeline of tender opportunities, ensuring alignment with WM5G’s growth strategy.Market Intelligence and Growth Strategyo Conduct in-depth market analysis to identify emerging trends, policy shifts, and funding opportunities in the health and care sector.o Provide strategic recommendations to the leadership team on market positioning and competitive differentiation.o Develop thought leadership content and contribute to industry discussions to position WM5G as a leader in digital health innovation.o Explore new commercial models and partnership opportunities to drive business scalability and sustainability.Team Collaboration and Supporto Work closely with Health and Care Director, Commercial, Finance and Marketing Leads and the wider organisation to ensure alignment on goals and activities.o Provide mentorship and guidance to junior team members or cross-functional colleagues involved in BD activities.Person SpecificationEssential:o 5+ years’ experience in business development, sales, or a commercial role within the healthcare sector.o Proven track record of securing and managing high-value contracts (£1m+ revenue targets).o Strong understanding of NHS procurement, commissioning processes, and funding mechanisms.o Excellent bid writing and tender management skills, with a demonstrable track record of successful submissions.o Experience in CRM systems and sales pipeline management.o Strong financial and commercial acumen, with experience in pricing strategy and contract negotiations.o Ability to build and maintain relationships with senior stakeholders across public and private healthcare organisations.o Exceptional presentation and communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex propositions clearly and persuasively.Desirable:o Established network within the UK healthcare sector, including ICBs, NHS trusts, and private healthcare providers.Experience working in a start-up or scale-up environment, driving rapid commercial growth.o Familiarity with digital health, med-tech, or remote monitoring solutions.o Strong knowledge of community diagnostics, remote monitoring pathways, or related healthcare technologies.o Business development or sales qualification (e.g., CIM, APMP, or equivalent).Additional informationThe above list is indicative only and not exhaustive.
