Job Title: Horticultural Technician Salary: £26,338–£29,959 per annum Location: Stratford, Wellesbourne Contract Type: Full-time, Fixed Term (2027) Job Purpose To support the UK Vegetable Genebank (UKVGB) through the management and delivery of plant husbandry and seed production activities. The role plays a vital part in the long-term conservation of vegetable genetic resources, contributing to agrobiodiversity and global food security. You’ll become part of a small, friendly, and dedicated team committed to plant science and biodiversity. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on plant work and wants to make a meaningful impact in a globally important field. Key Responsibilities 1. Plant Husbandry * Undertake full-cycle plant care: seed sowing, pricking out, potting, and harvesting in controlled glasshouse environments. * Manage environmental settings using automated/manual controls. * Design and apply feeding regimes (manual or automated). * Lead pest and disease detection, treatment, and application of approved pesticides (NPTC certified). 2. Environmental Control & Glasshouse Maintenance * Maintain glasshouse standards and coordinate maintenance with Estates and external contractors. * Monitor environmental conditions to reduce plant loss. * Install and manage irrigation systems and isolation cages. * Ensure sterilisation and hygiene of equipment and facilities. 3. Purchasing & Resource Management * Procure and maintain stock of consumables to support uninterrupted operations. * Manage space and material allocation in line with project needs. 4. Health & Safety * Ensure adherence to health and safety procedures, risk assessments, and COSHH regulations. * Provide H&S guidance to team members and visitors. 5. Project Development & Facility Use * Support trial planning and record observations for crop characterisation. * Oversee pollinator production. * Prepare facilities for public visits and Open Days; assist in hosting visitors and explaining UKVGB activities. 6. Communication & Engagement * Liaise with internal and external stakeholders, update managers, and supervise casual workers. * Participate in weekend watering duties as required (rota system with Horticultural Services). Requirements: Essential: * A Level 3 vocational qualification, HNC, or equivalent experience in horticulture * NPTC PA1 & PA6 pesticide certifications * Strong experience in managing glasshouse environments * Excellent knowledge of plant care, pest and disease management * Ability to work independently and manage workloads seasonally * Strong attention to detail and record-keeping * Team player with excellent communication skills Desirable: * Understanding of seed production for genetic resource conservation * Experience using databases
