Researcher, Trade & Investment, Clean Economy, London E3G is looking for a researcher to support the delivery of our work on the intersection of international trade & investment policy with climate change. This role would be based in E3G’s London office. Background E3G is an independent climate change think tank with a global outlook. We are world-leading strategists on the political economy of climate change, dedicated to achieving a safe climate for all. We work on the frontier of the climate landscape tackling the barriers and advancing the solutions to a safe climate. Our goal is to translate climate politics, economics and policies into action. E3G is consistently ranked as one of the world's most influential environmental think tanks by the University of Pennsylvania’s Global Go To Think Tank Index. E3G offers a dynamic and fast paced working environment that will value your insight, initiative and collaboration wherever you are in the organisation. Overview Based in the Clean Economy petal, this researcher role will contribute to developing and delivering E3G’s work on trade, investment and climate change. The researcher will provide expertise on the intersection of these policy areas in the UK, EU and international context, through a combination of political analysis and external engagement. The successful candidate will also be expected to conduct analytical work on trade policy and investment governance. The specific areas of focus will depend on the evolving priorities of E3G’s Trade & Investment team, as we continue to identify new opportunities to deliver climate action through international cooperation on trade and investment. Examples of our recent work include developing proposals to strengthen bilateral trade partnerships or developing geopolitical scenarios to analyse positions on unilateral trade measures. This role will also support E3G’s efforts to create international investment governance that can achieve climate goals. E3G has been pushing for the global reform of the current investment regime, based on investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS), by providing strategic guidance and analysis and mobilising like-minded actors. In addition, this role will help scope out E3G’s work on a broader investment governance to facilitate and promote climate-aligned investments. Key Responsibilities Conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis and produce written outputs such as blogs and briefings, including data visualisation, to communicate E3G proposals to public and private audiences. Monitor relevant developments in international trade and investment policy, including recently negotiated free trade agreements and investment treaties and relevant climate/energy policies of key countries. Analyse literature on the intersection of international investment governance and climate and support the development of strategies and narratives by providing data and ideas. Manage and grow relationships with external partners, including academic and research organisations both in the UK and internationally. Work collaboratively and flexibly across E3G’s Clean Economy team to support the objectives of colleagues in London, Brussels and Berlin. Provide administrative support where needed, including preparing and organising meetings and events and writing minutes. Some travel might be required but we are open to discussing this if this would otherwise become a barrier to your application. This is not an exhaustive list, and the post-holder will be asked to undertake other tasks as required within the team and the wider organisation. Person Description You are intellectually curious and enthusiastic about working with others to develop solutions in the transition towards climate-neutral and resilient economies. You are committed to high-quality outputs even when working under pressure and use collaboration to achieve better outcomes. You are a creative thinker and able to learn fast. You are passionate about climate issues and keen to make an impact. You have a strong analytical mindset and are confident in working with raw data to develop actionable insights.
