Job Description

Social network you want to login/join with: We are currently seeking Systems Engineers to join the Decommissioning & Waste Services market within our Nuclear & Power business. Ideally based in our existing locations in the North of England, although other locations UK wide can be considered. Reporting to the Systems Engineering Capability Lead, you will be responsible for applying Systems Engineering processes, methods, and tools to a wide variety of projects across our nuclear decommissioning and waste management portfolio, while also assisting in the continual development of our capability. Successful candidates will have a proven background in Systems Engineering and will work alongside the Systems Engineering Capability Lead and others to develop and grow the newly established Systems Engineering capability within our market, supporting projects from within our market and across the wider Nuclear & Power (N&P) business. This involves requirements management, model-based systems engineering (MBSE), interface management, and verification & validation activities. Our market focuses on supporting engineering design delivery for enrichment and fuel manufacture, plant life extension, decommissioning, and waste handling projects across their full lifecycle including commissioning and operation. We offer innovative solutions through our own products and technology to accelerate change and augment resources for our clients and partners. Alongside Systems Engineering, we have strong capabilities in the design, assessment, and substantiation of structures, machinery, mechanical handling equipment, low voltage electrical systems, and control and instrumentation systems. Our projects present varied technical challenges and significant nuclear and safety hazards, requiring proactive and collaborative working to engineer a safer, cleaner, net-zero world. We invest continually in our people, technology, facilities, and resources to enhance our current capabilities and develop new ones, enabling us to deliver projects using industry-leading and innovative techniques, including our growing technology solutions and robotics capabilities, demonstrated through active demonstrators. Read more about how you can thrive with us: Equality, diversity & inclusion in the UK & Europe () The Role: We seek engineers with experience and expertise in Systems Engineering to develop our capability within the Decommissioning & Waste Services market. This capability complements our core disciplines (Mechanical, Civil & Structural, Electrical, Control & Instrumentation) and growing areas (Engineering Management, Technology Solutions, Robotics). As a new capability, our processes are still maturing. Responsibilities include supporting new and ongoing projects, developing and formalizing best practices into processes, and contributing to shaping business-wide policy. Responsibilities may also include supporting bid teams in winning work involving Systems Engineering. The Individual: You should understand the application of a Systems Engineering approach to design, with experience in methodologies like architecture definition, Pugh matrices/optioneering, interface management, requirements management, structured verification, and tools such as IBM DOORS. Experience with MBSE tools such as Capella or Sparx EA is desirable, as is awareness of different engineering lifecycles. Experience with VS Code or other coding languages and frameworks is also desirable. You should be eager to join a developing capability and support its growth, bringing your experience and knowledge. This role may involve working in environments where processes are not yet defined, so a proactive approach and careful assessment skills are essential. Adaptability in applying systems engineering in various ways to meet client needs and align with evolving processes is important. You should be comfortable managing multiple projects simultaneously, supporting an increasing number of projects across the Nuclear & Power business throughout their lifecycle. How will you contribute to the team? An innovator – Encourage experimentation, generate new ideas, challenge norms, and contribute to new ways of working to improve processes. An Improver – Focus on making processes, methods, and tools more efficient, resource-optimized, and leaner. Collaborate effectively with engineers, managers, and project teams across disciplines. An effective communicator – Clearly explain the value and application of Systems Engineering practices to diverse audiences, including those less familiar with the discipline. Why work for AtkinsRéalis? The UK’s commitment to Net Zero by 2050 drives our nuclear and clean energy initiatives, ensuring a sustainable energy mix.
