Postdoctoral Scientist– 25P-019The Pirbright Institute Salary: £38,500-£40,000 per annumPermanentOnsite: Woking, GU24Application closing date: 07/07/2025Please send your cv alongside a cover letter to the Pirbright institute The Pirbright institute delivers world-leading research to understand, predict, detect and respond to viral disease outbreaks. We study viruses of livestock that are endemic and exotic to the UK, including zoonotic viruses, by using the most advanced tools and technologies to understand host-pathogen interactions in animals and arthropod vectors. Our major strength in understanding the immune systems of livestock provides a platform to control current diseases and respond to emerging threats. This important research would not be possible without the proportionate use of animals, which are integral to the development of new disease control measures such as vaccines and diagnostics. We have an establishment-wide commitment to the 3rs (replacement, reduction and refinement), high standards of animal welfare, a culture of care and openness. Our institute is made up of a dynamic and vibrant community of staff covering a diverse set of chosen fields, backgrounds and experience. We all play a crucial role in furthering the institute’s aspirations, advancing the frontiers of science and knowledge through our excellent scientific research, knowledge sharing and contribution; with a real focus in improving the world in which we live. Our outlook is always balanced by our strong sense of purpose, values and behaviours and an unwavering commitment to a ‘one institute’ approach.Organisation position and purposeThe aim of this post is to carry out studies and surveillance of Culicoides biting midges and to contribute to insect production and supply within our insectary facilities. As part of Defra-funded activities, we monitor Culicoides populations seasonally, working closely with policymakers, epidemiologists, and field veterinary personnel to predict and mitigate the impact of arboviruses entering the UK.In collaboration with another postdoctoral researcher, this role will jointly manage the existing surveillance system and conduct research related to Culicoides and the viruses they transmit. The postholder will also work within an established team to provide unique insect lines for internal and external users in both the UK and internationally. This role would suit an entomologist with broad interests and a proactive approach—someone who enjoys applied science, supports others in their research, and can multitask effectively. Full training will be provided in Culicoides identification, related research techniques, and in the production and maintenance of specific insect lines. The role is based within the Vector Ecology Group and reports to the Group Lead.Main duties and ResponsibilitiesMaintaining a Surveillance Scheme for Culicoides Biting Midges in the UKSelect sites for sampling Culicoides populations across the UKDistribute sampling materials to volunteers involved in the schemeIdentify Culicoides specimens collected through the scheme and in other studiesUse molecular techniques to differentiate cryptic Culicoides speciesLiaise with the Group Leader to provide seasonal data and insights to stakeholders, including policymakers, epidemiologists, and members of the publicConducting Independent Scientific Research on Culicoides and Other VectorsDevelop, plan, and carry out studies assessing the risk of vector-borne viruses in the UKWrite and contribute to scientific publications based on research outcomesSupport and supervise undergraduate, MSc, and PhD students where requiredCollaborate with colleagues across the Vector Ecology Group to support wider research projectsInsect Colony Production and MaintenanceMaintain colonies of biting flies to meet internal and external demandProvide cover for additional insect lines during staff absencesAssist with the development and maintenance of new insect colony linesSpecific Requirements EssentialA PhD in Entomology, Ecology, or a related Biological ScienceDemonstrated enthusiasm and subject knowledge related to vectors of arbovirusesExcellent communication skills, with the ability to explain scientific concepts at varying levels of complexity depending on the audience, and to write clear, concise documentationPractical experience in molecular laboratory techniques, including nucleic acid extraction, PCR, and sequencingExperience in field-based research and data collectionDesirableExperience with classical taxonomic techniques for insect populations (e.g. morphometrics, slide mounting of specimens)Experience in the routine maintenance of insect colony lines and understanding of biocontainment principlesExperience conducting surveillance related to arboviruses and/or vector populationsExperience in designing and delivering independent research studiesEvidence of publishing research in peer-reviewed scientific journalsWhat we offerGenerous Group Personal Pension Scheme and life cover (subject to age and earnings)25 days annual leave per annum, pro rata, plus 10.5 public and privilege daysBuy and sell annual leave Option to carry over up to two weeks annual leavePirbright gym with subsidised membership Pirbright social clubPirbright Lifestyle Hub (employee discount site) Cycle to work Subsidised staff restaurantChildcare allowanceFree onsite parking Electric Car charging facilitiesDue to the high volume of applications, we receive, if you have not heard from us within one month from closing date of the vacancy, then please contact us on for an update.
