Job Description

Purpose of the Role To provide high-quality care, leadership, and support within a residential childrens home. The Deputy Manager plays a key role in safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, supporting staff development, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. This position involves both operational and supervisory responsibilities and requires a flexible and proactive approach. Key Responsibilities Support the Registered Manager to ensure the home meets all statutory and regulatory requirements. Safeguard and promote the welfare, safety, health, and development of all children in the home. Lead and support staff to deliver structured, therapeutic, and nurturing care tailored to each child. Develop and maintain individual care plans and risk assessments, ensuring regular review and updates. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records and reports in line with legislation and internal policies. Participate in the on-call rota and provide shift cover, including sleep-ins, when required. Create staff rotas and manage annual leave schedules. Attend and contribute to childrens reviews, education and health meetings, and other multi-agency forums. Oversee delegated areas including health and safety, food hygiene, and keyworker responsibilities. Mentor new staff, provide supervision, conduct appraisals, and support professional development. Take the lead during shifts and deputise in the absence of the Registered Manager. Liaise effectively with external agencies and regulatory bodies including Ofsted. Person Specification Essential: Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare (or equivalent). Willingness to work towards Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare. Demonstrable understanding of child development, safeguarding, and relevant legislation (e.g., Childrens Homes Regulations 2015). Experience of working in a residential childcare setting. Strong leadership and team-working skills. Excellent communication skills verbal, written, and IT literate. Ability to maintain professional boundaries, act as a role model, and promote positive outcomes for children. Flexibility to cover shifts, including nights and weekends. Full UK driving licence. Desirable: Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management (Children & Young People). Knowledge of therapeutic approaches to childcare. Experience in managing teams or acting in a senior role.
