Job Title: Quality Manager Reports to: Head of Commercial Line manages: Inventory Control Job Summary We are seeking a highly experienced and driven Quality Manager to lead the development and implementation of our Quality Management System (QMS) and to ensure robust quality standards across all stages of our production and supply chain. This is a pivotal role with strategic and operational responsibilities, including the ownership of quality documentation, systems, and final product release. You will work cross-functionally with engineering, production, supply chain, and senior leadership to embed quality at the heart of the organization, ensuring compliance, consistency, and continual improvement. The role involves identifying and addressing defects and failure modes within each product category and supplier products, capturing defect data, identifying trends/risk to the business and continuously improving quality control practices to improve the offering and reputation of Ellard and our products. Responsibilities Quality Management System • Design, implement and maintain the Quality Management System (QMS) in line with relevant industry standards and regulatory requirements. • Develop and control all quality documentation, including quality manuals, procedures, work instructions, forms, and templates. • Embed a culture of Quality throughout all Ellard operations, products and services under the ethos of ‘More than just a product’, striving for best in industry standards. • Conduct internal audits and manage external audits or inspections from customers or regulatory bodies. Product Inspection and Release • Own and manage product inspection and release processes, including final quality sign-off for incoming goods and finished products. • Conduct batch-specific sample testing and thorough inspection of incoming goods and materials to ensure they meet predefined quality standards. • Develop and implement inspection criteria and processes based on defect types and failure modes associated with specific product categories and suppliers. • Ensure adequate control measures for supplier compliance, quality and product controls. • Compile and establish quality control standards, ensuring they align with the nature of defects/failure modes identified for various product categories. • Continuously update and improve quality standards in response to feedback and data collected from inspections and defect analysis. • Ensure adherence to all industry standards, legislation and governance. • Oversee non-conformance management, root cause analysis, and the implementation of corrective and preventive actions (CAPA). • Ownership of Ellard Default Tracker and overall coordination and release of goods. • Coordination and implementation of any CAPAs throughout Ellard supply chain as applicable. • Develop, implement and maintain a CAPA register and lessons learned process to support continuous improvement across the business. • Capture and document defect data, including types of defects, frequencies, and their impact on product quality. • Conduct root cause analysis of recurring defects and work to develop corrective actions and preventive measures. • Support in data-led decisions such as supplier quality score to ensure the most viable supply chain is established and controlled. Collaboration with Cross-Functional Teams • Work closely with the technical, sales, and procurement teams to ensure that quality control standards and inspection requirements are integrated and adopted across the organisation. • Ensure smooth transition and controlled release of accepted incoming goods through to warehouse and production. • Provide technical support and guidance on quality-related issues, ensuring that necessary changes are communicated and implemented effectively. • Assist in the development and implementation of continuous improvement initiatives to enhance product quality and streamline quality control processes. • Monitor performance metrics and quality trends to identify opportunities for improvement and drive quality improvements across the supply chain. Supplier Quality Management • Work with purchasing and our suppliers to communicate quality requirements and expectations, ensuring adherence to agreed standards. • Monitor supplier performance and collaborate on corrective actions for defective or non-conforming materials. Reporting and Documentation • Maintain accurate records of inspections, defect data, and corrective actions taken. • Prepare regular quality reports for senior management, highlighting trends, issues, and actions taken to improve product quality. Qualifications and Skills • Level 5 or greater qualification in Engineering, Quality Management, or a related field (or equivalent experience) is essential. • Proven experience as a Quality Manager or in a similar quality management role, ideally within a trading environment of electro-mechanical items. • Strong knowledge of quality control processes, inspection techniques, and defect analysis. • Familiarity with industry standards and regulations (e.g., ISO 9001, or other relevant quality frameworks). • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to identify trends and implement corrective actions. • Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with technical, sales, procurement teams, and suppliers. • Good numerical skills are essential, e.g. the ability to work with ratios, percentages, and understand business-critical measures such as direct and indirect costs, margin, turnover, profit etc. • Experience of using a range of ERP systems is essential. • Intermediate skills in MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel) are essential. • Detail-oriented with a focus on continuous improvement. • In-depth knowledge (or ability to learn) the technical aspects of the products and services that Ellard provides is essential. Additional Requirements • Ability to travel occasionally (potentially UK-wide) for work, training and other business purposes is essential. • Understanding of supply chain dynamics and its impact on product quality. • Maintain own professional and personal development to ensure continued enjoyment of the role and consistent ‘good practice’ delivery to the business. • Work with colleagues from other departments and across the Indutrade UK Business Area and beyond as required to develop and promote the interests of Ellard Limited. • Undertake any and all other duties as the business requires, in line with the responsibilities of the role, as may reasonably be requested from time to time.
