The Department provides Anaesthesia services for all major surgical specialties and works across two sites. Most elective work takes place at Castle Hill Hospital whilst urgent care, obstetric and paediatric care is at Hull Royal Infirmary. The Women's and Children's hospital manages about 6000 deliveries per year, with an elective caesarean section rate of 10% and an emergency caesarean section rate of 15%. For many years, Hull has been a leading centre for the practice and teaching of obstetric anaesthesia. There are active research and audit programs and opportunities for innovation in clinical practice. Most Paediatric services are offered at the Hull Royal Infirmary site. Most elective paediatric surgical work includes general paediatric surgery, orthopaedics, urology, plastics, ENT and Oral maxillofacial surgery in the inpatient and Day Surgery setting. Some neonatal surgery in elective and occasionally emergency setting is provided during daytime hours only. No out of hours neonatal surgery is currently undertaken. The average number of paediatric surgical cases done in the 5 years from 2020-2024 is around 2500 per year Radiology investigations such as planned paediatric MRI lists are also part of our service provision. Main duties of the jobThe Consultant will be in conjunction with colleagues: - Provide an anaesthetic service in accordance with the agreed timetable and subsequent job plan. - Flexibilty to provide cover for paediatric emergencies in day time job planned hours. - Consultant on call 1:22 to cover General theatres at Hull Royal Infirmary site. - Supervise trainee anaesthetic staff within the Trust. There is a plan to commence a paediatric oncall rota in the future to meet the demands of the service. Eligible to be on the Specialist Register within 6 months of interview or on the Specialist Register MD, PhD or M Med Sci Further qualification in medical education Qualifications and TrainingMust be able to demonstrate a high level of training, clinical experience and competence in all anaesthetic techniques required for this post Must have completed Advanced Training in Paediatric Anaesthesia Worked in the UK for at least 12 months as an anaesthetist Minimum of 7 years Anaesthesia experience ALS Provider PALS Provider Expertise in Regional Anaesthesia techniques ATLS provider Clinical ExperienceUnderstanding of current issues in the NHS, and of the responsibilities of a NHS consultant. Attendance at recognised management courses. Management and Administration ExperienceExperience in training and teaching postgraduate and doctors and medical students in small and large groups. Trained in assessment of junior doctors Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops. Teaching, Audit and ResearchAbility to carry out medical research.
