Job Description

Aureos are seeking a Principal High Voltage Cable Design Engineer to lead our HV cable design team and drive technical innovation across our projects.Key ObjectivesThe Principal / Lead Engineer will be responsible forLeading the HV cable engineering discipline across multiple projects.Providing strategic technical direction and oversight.Ensuring the highest quality of design output and technical documentation.Supporting business development through technical leadership in bids and tenders.Mentoring and developing senior and junior engineers.Key Responsibilities Lead the production and review of all HV cable system designs, calculations, reports, and drawings.Oversee complex engineering tasks including:Cable rating and thermal analysis (IEC60287)Induced voltage and EMF calculationsThermo-mechanical and short circuit force calculationsCable pulling tension and feasibility studiesApprove bonding/line diagrams, material specifications, and route layouts.Chair design reviews, HAZID, and hazard assessments.Ensure compliance with client specifications and industry standards (IEC, CIGRE).Manage internal and external engineering teams and ensure project delivery within scope, time, and budgetAct as the primary technical liaison with clients and stakeholders.Drive innovation and continuous improvement in HV cable design practices.Support the development of internal standards and quality assurance processes.ProgressionThis role is a senior leadership position with potential to progress into Director-level roles within the business.Education & KnowledgeEssential:BEng/Bsc/Msc in Electrical & Electronical Engineering, Power systems or related field – or equivalent qualifications and experienceDesirable: Relevant certifications in electrical engineering: Working towards or willing to work towards CEng status. Working towards or willing to work towards SR137 CDAE role by National GridKey Attributes & SkillsProven leadership in HV cable engineeringStrong interpersonal and communication skillsAbility to manage multidisciplinary teams and mentor engineersHigh attention to detail and commitment to qualityStrategic thinker with a proactive, solution-oriented mindsetTechnical Skills & ExperienceHV Cable DesignDelivering project cable system design requirements, including but not limited to:Current ratings (IEC60287)Forced ventilation design for cable tunnelsImpressed voltage calculationsEmergency, Cyclic & Short term overload ratingsCable crossing ratingsProducing Bonding diagramsProducing Material Schedules & Technical specificationsThermo-mechanical design calculation Effective thermal resistivity calculationsInduced voltage calculationsCable pulling tension calculationsShort circuit current rating and electromagnetic force calculationsProducing Joint bay, trench, CSE, cable routing designs (concept & detailed)SVL (Sheath Voltage Limiter) sizingEMF plots Route layouts & trench cross sections Earthing & bonding designsKey Responsibilities and RequirementsGuiding and Mentoring junior 'senior engineers Prepare, review, and approve feasibility studies, technical reports, and design documents.Design, verify, and approve detailed allocation and construction design drawings.Develop and validate design concepts, drawings, specifications, and other technical documentation.Conduct a site visit to review the cable route and joint bay locations.Manage engineering teams and external suppliers to ensure project success.Ensure timely delivery of work within scope, budget, and specifications.Participate / chair in Design & HAZID (Hazards in Design) reviews as required.Maintain and control documents and drawings in compliance with AS Design & Engineering Ltd. management procedures.Oversee design input/output within the designated risk management process.Establish team-specific standards to ensure consistency and quality.Support the professional development of CAD technicians.Take ownership of assigned tasks and responsibilities within agreed job boundaries.Provide regular programme updates to Lead Engineers throughout the project lifecycle.Identify and highlight potential quality and delivery risks.Act as a technical liaison with third parties.Demonstrate a strong understanding of IEC & Cigre standards.Proficiency in software such as CYMCAP and COMSOLFamiliarity with client-specific technical specifications from National Grid, SSE, Scottish Power, NGED, RWE, UKPN, ENWL, etc.Strong computer skills, including report writing and documentation.Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.A proactive attitude towards learning new skills and applying existing expertise to new challengesCompetence in creating and formatting high-quality drawings for contractors, suppliers, and fabricators.What We OfferCompetitive salary and benefits package.Opportunities for career advancement and professional growth.A dynamic and supportive team environment.Equal opportunitiesAureos are an equal opportunities employer, and we are determined to ensure that no applicant or employee receives less favourable treatment on the grounds of gender, age disability, religion, belief, sexual orientation, marital status or race, or is disadvantaged by conditions or requirements which cannot be shown to be justifiable.
