You will work on the NIHR Health and Social Care Delivery Research (HSDR) Programme funded project “PLACES: Promoting Local Access to Children’s Early Language and Communication Support,” led by Professors Lindsay Pennington and Cristina McKean. The project aims to tailor evidence-based early language interventions to local needs, widen access to services, and reduce inequalities in children’s language development. We will collaborate with NHS, local authority, and third sector services in North Tyneside, Redcar and Cleveland, and Wolverhampton. You will be based in one of these areas, working as part of the local team as a research practitioner, supported by the research team and local service leads. Your responsibilities will include: Leading data collection organization in schools and nurseries Developing and maintaining supportive relationships with early years staff Ensuring communication with parents and timely distribution and collection of information Conducting assessments of language development in young children Organizing meetings with parents for surveys on children’s development and service use Keeping accurate records of children’s assessment performance Disseminating information through various media Contributing to reports and conference papers Attending meetings and providing progress reports Undertaking additional tasks as required Engaging in professional development activities The PersonKnowledge, Skills, and Experience Managing paediatric speech and language therapy caseloads for preschool children from disadvantaged backgrounds Experience working as a speech and language therapist in early years settings Ability to conduct accurate assessments of young children’s language development Experience working with interpreters Ability to build relationships with diverse groups Flexibility to manage multiple deadlines Understanding of health and educational contexts in England Knowledge of intervention and assessment approaches for children with SLCN Knowledge of professional standards Sensitivity to diverse cultural backgrounds Experience working with bilingual families Driver’s license and access to own car Attributes and Behaviours Team collaboration skills Negotiation and influencing skills Attention to detail and record keeping Self-reflection and analysis skills Ability to seek advice appropriately Willingness to travel Understanding of health, safety, and ethical issues Commitment to equality and diversity Flexibility Qualifications Relevant qualification to practice as a speech and language therapist (2:1 or higher) Current HCPC registration Membership of RCSLT Newcastle University values diversity and is committed to inclusive recruitment.
