Job Description

Location: Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners, Cumbria We are looking to contract an experienced researcherto undertake historical research to support the phase 1 re-interpretation of parts of The Rum Story in Whitehaven. This is part of The Rum Story Re-Imagined Project, made possible by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. The Rum Story aims to be accessible, inclusive, and engaging for everyone. Created in 2000, it currently aligns with traditional heritage narratives, which dilute Britain’s role in the Transatlantic slave trade and its profits. The Re-Imagined project, a partnership between Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners and Anti Racist Cumbria, seeks to address these issues and enhance Whitehaven’s prominence in UK heritage. Research will focus on the following areas: Whitehaven’s evolution and 18th-century context The Jefferson Family’s businesses and philanthropy The transatlantic trade, including enslavement of African people and its legacies The production of rum on Antigua sugar plantations in the 18th century and onwards Antigua’s history before and after colonisation The cultures of West African peoples before and after enslavement#J-18808-Ljbffr
