This is an exciting opportunity to join the sleep and ventilation team here at OUH. The Oxford Adult Sleep and Ventilation Service is a regional centre with a world-class clinical and academic reputation, delivering excellence in care locally and to neighbouring counties, working in partnership with a wide OUH MDT across primary and secondary care. This is new post to support delivery in all aspects of the service. In addition, alongside other appointments, this post will help embed Respiratory Higher Care and both in- and out- patient care at the Horton Hospital, an area of the county with higher Respiratory Health inequalities. Main duties of the jobThe post holder’s principal duties are based at the Horton, John Radcliffe and Churchill Hospitals (total of 10 PA) comprising a mix of 8.5 clinical PAs and 1.5 supporting PA s. The appointee will be responsible for the diagnosis and care of patients with sleep related breathing disorders including home non-invasive ventilation service for Oxfordshire and regional patients. Of the clinical PAs, PAs are allocated to diagnostic sleep study reporting, out-patient clinics and review of day case and in-patient non-invasive ventilation patients. There is a contribution to the general respiratory clinic and in patient ward working. It is a condition of the appointment that the postholder will be willing to work in any of the Trust’s locations. Detailed job description and main responsibilitiesTeaching/Research Oxford Radcliffe University Hospitals NHS Trust is a teaching hospital Trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. It is expected that this will be an integral part of every day clinical activity. The post-holder’s contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review. Clinical Governance, Audit and QI The post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies. Personal and Professional Development The post-holder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other appropriate personal development needs. The post holder will be expected to participate in regular Appraisal and Revalidation processes. The post holder will be allocated a mentor. Management The post-holder will be required to work within the Trust's management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, accepting that the resources available to the Trust are finite and that all changes in clinical practice or workload, or developments requiring additional resources must have prior agreement with the Trust. He/she will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients, and the running of his/her clinical department under the direction of the lead clinician and/or directorate chair. The management of risk is the responsibility of everyone and will be achieved within a progressive, honest and open environment. Staff will be provided with the necessary education, training and support to enable them to meet this responsibility. Staff should be familiar with the and should make themselves familiar with the ‘local response’ plan andtheirrole within that response. Responsibilities for Health & SafetyThe post holder is responsible for ensuring that all duties and responsibilities of this post are carried out in compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, Statutory Regulations and Trust Policies and Procedures. This will be supported by the provision of training and specialist advice where required. Infection Control Infection Control is everyone’s responsibility. All staff, both clinical and non clinical, are required to adhere to the Trusts’ Infection Prevention and Control Policies and make every effort to maintain high standards of infection control at all times thereby reducing the burden of Healthcare Associated Infections including MRSA. All staff employed by the ORH Trust have the following key responsibilities: Staff must decontaminate their hands prior to and after direct patient contact or contact with the patient’s surroundings. Staff members have a duty to attend mandatory infection control training provided for them by the Trust. Staff members who develop an infection (other than common colds and illness) that may be transmittable to patients have a duty to contact Occupational Health. Person specificationQualifications/TrainingMRCP or equivalent CCT in Respiratory Medicine or registration on GMC Specialist register in Respiratory Medicine; OR within six months of achieving CCT at the time of interview MD or PhD Skills and KnowledgeExcellent leadership skills to function as a consultant in the specialty Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to function as a consultant in a large teaching hospital Track record of ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team Good spoken and written English. Communication skills should be highly developed Experience of teaching undergraduates and trainees Clear understanding of current clinical governance structures and evidence of active contributions to clinical governance during specialty training. Commitment to continuing professional development. Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities Evidence of active interest and participation in research Evidence of leadership in research, professional bodies, or other spheres Evidence of organisational skills in research, professional bodies or other spheres Proven ability to communicate in written form (publications, reports etc) Experience of supervising junior researchers ExperienceExperience in all aspects of management of patients with sleep related breathing disorders, including reporting of sleep studies. Experience of bronchoscopy and care of acute respiratory in-patients Experience of diagnosis and care of patients with ventilatory failure secondary to neuro-muscular disorders, obesity hypoventilation, chest wall disease and intrinsic lung disease.
