Department of Microbiology, Virology and Infection Prevention ControlSpecialist Biomedical Scientist – Microbiology & Virology (Fixed Term 1 year) Band 6We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic HCPC registeredBiomedical Scientist in Microbiology and Virology to participate in theVirology department’s diagnostic service, including serology, 16S pan-bacterial PCR, viral real-time PCR, Sanger sequencing and respiratory metagenomics.This is an externally funded fixed term post for 12 months.Candidates are expected to posses an understanding and experience PCR; experience of metagenomics, next-generation sequencing and/or 16S PCR and sequencing would be advantageous.The department provides an extensive range of investigations to support the specialist patient population of this tertiary referral paediatric hospital, and also provides a specialist service to other hospitals. This is an excellent opportunity to work as part of an expanding molecular team in Microbiology and Virology.This is a vibrant, progressive, well equipped, and ISO:15189 accreditedlaboratoryTo select and perform appropriate laboratory investigations on patient samples as requested by the clinical services or determined by a review of clinical details Take responsibility for the quality and accuracy of the results produced Enter and validate laboratory results produced by themselves or other laboratory staff members To validate ,authorise and report results of investigations, to interpret results to assist diagnosis To ensure that all results are reported within agreed turnaround time To report and discuss all quality and other issues with senior members of staff To work within and maintain ISO 15189 standards To work in a safe and effective manner, knowing correct procedures for handling hazardous substances within the laboratory, observing the Health and Safety at Work Act and the Laboratory Safety and COSHH records To assist in the training and supervision of Medical Laboratory assistants.
