The successful candidate will provide high-quality care to patients with cardiology conditions, participate in the development and implementation of departmental policies, and contribute to the training and education of junior medical staff. The principal role of the post is to work as part of a team of 6 IC consultants to provide lab and PPCI cover for the Trust. This role will also provide opportunities to develop a specialist interest to complement the other Cardiology Consultants. Depending on your sub-specialty area of interest, diagnostic and procedural sessions will be available either on-site or off site with our sister Trust including Coronary Intervention, Cardiac MRI, Electrophysiology, DSE, TOE, pacing, angiography, CT Coronary Angiography, robust complex devices and electrophysiology programme. Main duties of the job· Clinical Duties: Deliver quality care for cardiology & GIM patients within the Cardiology department alongside other Cardiology Consultants. Participate in the general cardiology on-call weekend rota (1:15). Participate in the 24/7 PPCI OOH rota (1:6). Perform coronary angiography, coronary intervention, 'stent insertion. Perform simple and preferably complex pacing. Report on cardiac investigations. Provide clinical input to all patients on the cardiac ward & cardiology outliers. Share leadership for the intervention service 'specialist nurses. Participation of clinical activities Ashford, St Peters & Woking Hospital. Develop individualized care plans in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. Ensure compassionate & effective communication with patients & their families. Maintain detailed & accurate patient records. · Education and Training: Participate in teaching 'supervision of the junior doctor team & medical students, including Qualified Education Supervisor Programme (QESP) participation. Participate in continuing medical education & professional development. Lead & contribute to clinical research projects & audits. Organize, lead, & develop outpatient clinics on all sites in line with trust strategic protocols & policies. Participate in departmental meetings & contribute to the strategic planning & development. Contribute to quality improvement initiatives & patient safety programs. Detailed job description and main responsibilitiesKey Responsibilities:Clinical Duties: Deliver quality care for cardiology and GIM patients within the Cardiology department alongside other Cardiology Consultants. Provide cardiology input to outliers. Participate in the general cardiology on-call weekend rota (1:15 ward round). There will be an On call requirement to provide cardiology input for the Trust ( 1:4). Participate in the 24/7 PPCI rota (1:6). Perform coronary angiography, coronary intervention, stent insertion, and devices. Report on cardiac investigations. Provide clinical input to all patients on the cardiac ward and to cardiology outliers. Share leadership for the coronary intervention service. Advise and share leadership for specialist nurses. Teaching and Supervision: Take part in teaching and supervision of the junior doctor team and medical students, including Qualified Education Supervisor Programme (QESP) participation. Mentor and supervise junior doctors, medical students, and other healthcare professionals. Administrative and Strategic Duties: Contribute to the Trust’s vision, strategic objectives, and key work programmes. Provide a high-quality cardiology service. Organize, lead, and develop outpatient clinics on both sites in line with trust and strategic protocols and policies. Manage and supervise junior doctors and staff on the cardiac ward. Learning, Development, and Research:The Trust encourages and supports consultants with a special interest to develop their interest, where it meets department objectives, can be audited and reviewed, and provides learning opportunities for other staff. Clinical Audit and Research:Participate in clinical audit activities of the department and hospitals, ensuring effective record-keeping. Undertake research and develop special interests within the limits of clinical and service workload.Continuing Medical Education:Undertake continuing medical education internally and externally with study leave entitlement as appropriate.Supporting Professional Activities (SPA):SPA Commitments:ASPH is committed to ensuring that all Consultants have dedicated SPAs within their job plan which they will be expected to carry out on-site/in the workplace. Specific responsibilities will be developed on appointment and according to areas of interest. SPA activities include:Audit, research, and local clinical governance activity. Formal teaching and preparation (e.g., giving lectures, seminars). Post-graduate teaching and training (e.g., junior doctors, medical students). External teaching and education delivery (e.g., ATLS, APLS). Clinical management, attendance at departmental and trust meetings. Appraisal, job planning, and rota organization. Service development, quality improvement work, major incident planning.Schedule:SPA activity will be scheduled based on individual preference and to meet the needs of the service. The balance of sessions between Ashford & St. Peter’s is flexible. Teaching and training will require verification of teaching certification.Continuing Professional Development:Educational Programme:All consultants participate in the medical division’s education and training programme, which includes a weekly Journal Club, a monthly mortality and morbidity meeting, and a quarterly educational half-day.Support for CPD:The Trust supports the requirements for CPD as laid down by the Royal College of Physicians and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities. Consultants are expected to participate in Trust Educational and Audit programmes and maintain an appropriate level of external CPD activity.On-Call Rota:Currently, acute cardiac patients are admitted by the on-call medical team. The postholder will participate in a 1:6 PPCI OOH rota with a 1:15 weekend ward round. There will be an On call requirement to provide cardiology input for the Trust ( 1:4). The on-call availability supplement will be Category A (5%). PAs may be adjusted subject to the job plan and agreed work commitments, such as prospective colleague cover and additional duties. The on-call cardiologist will provide peri-take and post-take ward rounds to support the acute service and be available for cardiac procedures such as Intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP), pericardiocentesis, or temporary pacing. Interventional cardiologists will provide 24/7 cover for emergency/urgent interventions. Time off in lieu will be considered when consultants work during the weekend on-call. Person specificationQualificationsMRCP or equivalent CCT/CCST in Cardiology specialty Higher degree e.g. MD, PhD QESP or working towards CCST in GIM (or eligible for CCST and registration within 6 months of interview ExperienceWide clinical experience in Cardiology and General Internal Medicine Extensive experience in coronary intervention Sub-speciality interest in interventional cardiology Experience in complex devices and electrophysiology SkillsYou have knowledge and awareness of diversity and human rights and the competencies appropriate to your role to support their diverse needs and human rights.
