This role involves both physical system maintenance and day-to-day support for R&D activities. You will work closely with our engineering and research teams to ensure equipment is functional, lab spaces are well-managed, and systems are operated safely and effectively. This is an ideal position for someone with practical experience and an interest in technical systems, looking to grow within a fast-paced R&D environment. Full training will be provided. Key Responsibilities Prototype and Equipment Maintenance Perform routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting of lab equipment and prototype systems. Assist with the physical assembly, wiring, and repair of systems (e.g., replacing parts, tightening fittings, reconnecting cables). Handle gas system components (e.g., Swagelok piping, regulators, MFCs) under supervision. Log maintenance activities, conduct system checks, and follow documentation procedures. R&D Assistance and Lab Space Management Operate and monitor thin-film deposition systems, including setup, shutdown, and running experiments. Support R&D tasks by preparing equipment and materials and ensuring systems are operational. Maintain lab cleanliness and organisation, including cleaning tools and workspaces. Track lab consumables and spare parts; communicate with administrative staff to manage supply levels. Adhere to safety protocols when working with gases, chemicals, and electrical systems. Collaborate with engineers and researchers to support ongoing experiments and system testing. Assist in thin-film characterisation using basic measurement tools (e.g., profilometer, UV-vis) after training. Essential Requirements Right to work in the UK (we are currently unable to provide visa sponsorship). Bachelors degree or equivalent practical experience in mechanical, electrical, or chemical engineering, materials science, or a related field. Practical experience working with machines or technical systems (e.g., reactors, 3D printers, laboratory equipment). Comfortable working in a lab environment and handling both mechanical and electronic components. Proficient with hand tools and basic diagnostic instruments (e.g., multimeter, leak detectors, pressure gauges). Familiarity with lab or workshop safety procedures, especially involving gases, electricity, or chemicals. Strong attention to detail, with a hands-on, problem-solving mindset. Comfortable following structured procedures and technical instructions. Able to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced R&D environment. Good written and verbal communication skills. Preferred Qualifications 12 years of experience in a lab, field technician, or maintenance support role. Familiarity with gas systems (e.g., Swagelok fittings, MFCs, vacuum lines). Understanding of PID temperature control systems. Experience operating or supporting R&D or industrial lab equipment. Basic knowledge of electrical systems (e.g., power supplies, AC/DC wiring). Exposure to thin-film deposition techniques (e.g., ALD, CVD, PVD) or related chemical processes. Familiarity with programming or control platforms (e.g., Arduino, Python, C#). Experience with characterisation tools (e.g., Dektak profilometer, UV-vis). Work Environment & Culture This is a practical, hands-on role within a fast-paced R&D environment, ideal for someone who enjoys working directly with lab equipment and technical systems. You will be part of a small and collaborative start-up team, where your contributions will have a visible impact across ongoing projects. The role offers a balance of routine system operation, maintenance tasks, and involvement in research activities and testing. While full training and support will be provided, the ability to work independently, follow procedures, and adapt to evolving technical needs is essential. We value proactive problem-solvers who are curious, detail-oriented, and comfortable taking ownership of lab responsibilities.
