Band 5 Oral Health Improvement PractitionerHours: 1.5 WTE hours to be negotiated, working across Birmingham or the Black Country. Location: Based within locality clinic in Birmingham or the Black Country. Contract: Substantive The Oral Health Improvement Service is a commissioned service within the Dental Division of Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. The purpose of the Oral Health Improvement Team is to deliver evidence based, oral health interventions to reduce the inequalities in oral health, working across organisational boundaries within Birmingham & the Black Country. If you have a certificate/Diploma in oral health promotion, experience of delivering oral health improvement programmes and enjoy working with communities to improve oral health outcomes, then joining this new team might be the job for you. Main duties of the jobYou will be expected to be GDC registered to work within a team to contribute to the planning of oral health improvement interventions, the delivery of workforce development training, supervised toothbrushing programmes, Mouth Care Matters programmes, management of targeted toothbrushing resources and other evidence based interventions and evaluation. (or equivalent Diploma/ Business Technology and Education Council Level 4 professional qualification) or A Diploma or BSc in Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy. Award in education and Training (or equivalent Diploma / Business Technology and Education Council Level 3 ExperienceRelevant experience of planning and delivering oral health improvement programmes, training and events. Relevant experience of managing own workload and working to tight timescales. Relevant experience of team working. Skills/KnowledgeKnowledge of aetiology and prevention of dental diseases. Good understanding of health improvement principles and practices. Knowledge of the use of epidemiology and deprivation data to identify target groups. Understanding of the evidence base of health improvement. Excellent ability to communicate effectively using verbal and written skills. Knowledge of planning, managing and evaluating health improvement programmes. Understanding of planning and delivering multi disciplinary training. Excellent organisational and time management skills to work to fixed deadlines. Competent in the use of IT systems and Microsoft Office for delivering training, with good keyboard skills for writing reports and recording data. Ability to maintain and update professional competency Personal QualitiesA strong commitment to a social model of health for reducing oral health inequalities. Ability to motivate and influence others. Confidence to use initiative and make decisions. Ability to reflect on performance and identify areas for improvement. Other Job RequirementsAbility to manage conflict in a sensitive and assertive manner when seeking to change behaviour and practice. Concentration required when evaluating interventions, undertaking audits, writing briefings or reports. Ability to work flexibly to meet the needs of the role. A combination of walking, standing, sitting and bending will be required while carrying out training sessions. Car owner / driver essential for use on a daily basis. Travel may be required in all localities.
