Closing date : 22 nd August 2025About the role The city council is recruiting one independent member to be co-opted onto our Standards Committee for a four year period (maximum of two terms), to help promote and maintain high standards of conduct by elected and co-opted members. Co-opted independent members have no voting rights on the Standards Committee. Following their appointment the independent member will learn more about the Council’s ethical framework and how local government organisations operate, whilst working with the Monitoring Officer to provide objective and impartial views on issues relating to councillor behaviour.About you The Independent Chair of a Standards Committee’s primary role is to bring objectivity, impartiality and experience from outside of the city council to provide assurance to the public that there is the appropriate oversight in place. They ensure fairness, objectivity, and impartiality in the committee's work, often overseeing the handling of code of conduct complaints and fostering a culture of ethical governance. The Chair also facilitates meetings, manages procedural aspects, and ensures decisions are accurately recorded. Applicants should have the ability to be objective and impartial with good analytical and communication skills. They should also be available to attend quarterly committee meetings and ad hoc meetings to deal with case work.To ensure independence, there are restrictions on independent members, so for example, they should not be active in local or national politics, have had significant previous dealings with the Council which compromise their impartiality nor be a serving councillor or officer (or the spouse or civil partner of a councillor or officer) of Salford City Council, any other County or County Borough Council, a Fire Authority, a National Park Authority, or a Community/ Town Council.The independent member will be paid an annual allowance of £1,109.04.About the application process If you are interested in being considered for this role please read the attached Role Profile and complete the online application form.
