This post is for a substantive Consultant Medical Microbiologist in the Department of Medical Microbiology at Barking Havering and Redbridge NHS Trust. This is a new post. The appointee will, together with consultant microbiologist colleagues, be responsible for providing a comprehensive, efficient, and cost-effective clinical microbiology, virology, and infection prevention & control service to the Trust, local General Practitioners, and other users including PHE. The successful candidate will hold a contract for 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week plus 1 PA for the Microbiology on-call commitments. Position DetailsConsultant Medical Microbiology or Joint Infectious Diseases and Microbiology (10 PAs) The post attracts 10 programmed activities, with on-call duties on a one-in-five rota. The appointee will be the Lead for Antimicrobial Stewardship, developing, implementing, and monitoring BHRUT’s Antimicrobial Stewardship Programme, supported by the Senior Antimicrobial Pharmacist and Microbiology colleagues. Consultant offices are based at Queen’s Hospital, with clinical responsibilities rotating through both Queen’s Hospital and King George Hospital, where on-site laboratories are located. The appointee will be expected to take an active interest in these facilities. Candidates unable to work full-time for personal reasons will be considered, with job content modifications discussed on a personal basis. Clinical DutiesLiaise with clinicians, GPs, and the health protection team regarding infection diagnosis and management. Take responsibility for specific clinical areas on a rotational basis, including critical care, neonatal, haematology/oncology, A&E, surgical wards, and support for cancer and infection control services. Attend multidisciplinary team meetings and participate in ward rounds, antimicrobial stewardship rounds, and other clinical or audit meetings. Laboratory SupportSupport laboratory services through clinical interpretation of reports, answering queries, and participating in the on-call rota. Contributions include supervision of diagnostic methods, report interpretation, policy and SOP development, quality assurance, and maintaining accreditation with UKAS. Professional Development and Quality AssuranceEngage fully in the consultant appraisal process and develop a personal development plan annually.
