Brief DescriptionYou’ll help keep our nation moving every single day. A critical part of the work we do is the daily upkeep of the rail network. As a technician you’ll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users. We focus on transferable skills and behaviours, and if you can demonstrate them, we will provide training to work safely and competently on the network. Please Note:There may be a requirement to work on call in this role if you opt to take the GTRM IMC25 contract. About the role (External)Our technicians provide the essential link between the team leader and the team’s operatives. You will specialise in Signalling & Telecommunication and work with equipment including signals, level crossings and points systems. You’ll develop a broad range of technical skills across manual, electrical and digital equipment, with training provided to build competence. Technicians work outside in all conditions, day or night. The role involves demanding manual work and transporting kit across various terrains. You will be safety focused, respectful of rules and a team player, often working next to moving trains travelling at high speed. Your skills matter– You don’t necessarily need rail experience, but you should show how your transferable skills meet the following: Leadership– Lead, motivate and direct a team for safe and efficient work delivery. Effective communicator– Strong communication; deliver clear instructions to the team and colleagues. Technical skills– Knowledge and experience of inspection, faulting, maintenance and renewal in your discipline. Safety– Model safe behaviours, implement safe systems of work, and challenge unsafe situations. Problem solver– Persist in finding safe, effective solutions; keep skills up to date with new standards and instructions. Willingness to learn– Continuously develop skills and stay current with procedures. Relevant qualification– Ideally NVQ Level 1 or 2 related to the discipline, or equivalent experience. Outdoor working– Comfortable working in different weather conditions. Safe working– Offers subject to drug and alcohol testing and pre-employment checks (medical, BPSS, hearing and eyesight examinations). Driving– Driving licence (category B) required to drive Network Rail vehicles. Commute times– Must be within a 60-minute commute of the location applied for.
