OverviewJob summary: Required to fill this new post based at Leeds General Infirmary and may cover district general hospitals in the West Yorkshire Acute Trust (WYAAT) network. You will work with the existing team to deliver general neurology and epilepsy services. The present service has 2 Consultants; the post holder is expected to work with 18 neurology consultants and 3 specialist nurses. Clinics are delivered at LGI, Seacroft and Wharfedale sites, with some remote clinics in the WYATT region. The successful candidate will be part of the neurology on call at Leeds Teaching Hospitals LGI site. Interviews will be held on Friday 14 November 2025.Main dutiesThe applicant should possess MRCP (or equivalent) and be on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at interview time if currently in a UK training programme. Other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register in accordance with consultant appointment regulations.ResponsibilitiesThe post is a substantive consultant neurologist position with a special interest in epilepsy. The post will deliver 10 programmed activities (PAs) supporting the epilepsy team and will be based at Leeds General Infirmary. The epilepsy service manages a workload of around 10,000 patients for a population of 1.4 million (West Yorkshire and parts of North Yorkshire). There are 2 consultant neurologists specializing in epilepsy and 3 hospital-based epilepsy specialist nurses. The Leeds epilepsy team provides a comprehensive multidisciplinary service for people with epilepsy in Leeds and is a tertiary centre for epilepsy surgery. Outpatient epilepsy clinics (first fit, adolescent, obstetric, epilepsy surgery low-grade glioma and relevant research trial clinics) are delivered at 2 hospitals in Leeds. The post-holder will support both inpatient and outpatient general neurology and epilepsy services at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. There are opportunities to contribute to research and to the ongoing clinical research programmes in the department. For candidates dual-registered in General Internal Medicine (GIM) with appropriate experience, there is an expectation that 1.19 PAs of DCC to GIM will be included in the job plan to deliver inpatient care to general medical inpatients. The new GIM department is a brand-new service offering opportunities in service development, quality improvement, leadership and management. Job plans for GIM physicians will be reviewed after two years, with potential to transition activities as new Group 1 specialty consultants are appointed. An alternative option is to utilise 1.19 PA for acute internal medicine delivery, with timetable negotiated (similar form to GIM timetable).Person specificationTraining, Research, Teaching & AuditEssential: Completed a recognised neurology training programme with experience in epilepsy patients. Evidence of ability to carry out medical research. Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors. Experience of regular clinical audit. Desirable: Experience supervising research by junior staff. Experience with appraisal techniques and small group teaching workshops.QualificationsEssential: MB BS or equivalent qualification. MRCP or equivalent qualification or demonstrated equivalent experience. Full GMC registration with license to practice. Your GMC number must be clearly stated in your application to be considered. Eligibility to work in the UK. Up to date and fit to practise safely. Desirable: Relevant higher degree.ExperienceEssential: High level of clinical experience and competence in Neurology with an interest in epilepsy. Evidence of continuous career progression.Management, Interpersonal Skills & Other RequirementsEssential: Understanding of current NHS issues. Well organised and good time management. Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work within a team. Full GMC registration with license to practice. GMC Specialist Register entry via CCT (within 6 months of interview) or CESR; international applicants must be on the relevant Specialist Register at the time of application.
