Overview An exciting opportunity to be part of a brand-new Single Point of Access (SPA) service designed to transform how we deliver care and support to patients across urgent care and community services. This role offers the chance to shape a pioneering, person-centred service from the start. The SPA will act as the central hub for coordinating clinical referrals, triaging urgent needs, providing advice and directing patients to the right services at the right time. Responsibilities include answering calls, reviewing referrals, and coordinating rapid support to ensure timely, efficient, and compassionate responses for patients and professionals.ResponsibilitiesProvide expert clinical triage and decision-making for adult patients referred to SPA with same-day, urgent, or unplanned care needs.Support assessment of high-risk or complex cases, providing senior input and escalation where necessary.Supervise and advise non-medical clinicians (e.g., ACPs, Band 6 clinicians) on triage decisions, clinical queries, or referral pathways.Participate in or lead case discussions with specialist consultants via telephone MDTs to ensure robust decisions for complex patients.Promote a “right care, first time” approach that aligns with community-based care, hospital admission avoidance, and timely referrals.Work collaboratively across sectors – including primary care, community services, ambulance services, social care, mental health, and acute providers.Make direct referrals into community, mental health, urgent community response (UCR), hospital at home, intermediate care, and other appropriate services.Contribute to developing and refining clinical pathways and escalation protocols within the SPA.Provide guidance and leadership within a dynamic, forward-thinking multidisciplinary team and help develop a newly launched, high-impact service.Build new skills in triage, navigation, and integrated working; access to full training and ongoing CPD tailored to the role.Support assessment of referrals received from NHS 111, West Midlands Ambulance Service, and other healthcare professionals, validating dispositions and directing patients to the most appropriate clinical pathway.Work towards delivering joined-up care in partnership with WMAS and other system partners.Benefits / What we offerCompetitive sessional rate of £13,000NHS pension scheme eligibilityIndemnity provided for work undertaken on behalf of Birmingham Community HealthcareAnnual Leave entitlement on a pro-rata basisWork alongside WMAS and other system partners to deliver joined-up careBe part of a dynamic, forward-thinking multidisciplinary teamHelp develop a newly launched, high-impact serviceBuild new skills in triage, navigation, and integrated workingAccess to full training and ongoing CPD tailored to your roleOpportunities for career progression as the service expandsA supportive, inclusive, and flexible working environmentMake a real difference to patient outcomes and experienceThe General Practitioner working within the Single Point of Access (SPA) will play a central role in the clinical validation of referrals received from NHS 111, West Midlands Ambulance Service, and other healthcare professionals.
